OS 10.6.8 Recently I asked if I could buy a new imac and erase and install snow leopard. I now read that apple is giving a free upgrade of maverick to any mac 2007 or newer.
Since Jon told me that I couldn't retain S/L on a new imac, how come I can install OS 10.9 on my imac (2009) That means I could revert back to S/L if I didn;t like it. I guess I am missing something.

Macs aren't backwards-compatible, i.e. they can't run versions of OS X that pre-date the version with which they shipped, but they are forward-compatible as far as Apple allows them to go.

You're correct, that if you upgrade your iMac to 10.9 you'll be able to revert if you care to (and the best way to go about that is probably via a Time Machine backup).

artie, I have 2 identical backup partitions one of which I will boot up from and install maverick. I can then see which of my apps will work and if it's economical to keep maverick. Also thanks Jon. jaybass

That works, but keep close track of what you do in Mavericks, because you'll need to sync it with your Snowy partition if you decide to revert.

As for your apps, any PPC apps that you're now running via Rosetta are dead in the water when you get to Mavericks, because Rosetta was discontinued as of Lion.

Another thing you may run into regarding apps is that some of them will require paid upgrades for their post-Snowy-compatible versions, but if you do your homework, you may find (as have I...also running Snowy) that the new feature sets are unnecessary.

I'll get a tad anal on that comment and remind the masses that macs can very often go back a point or two from the version of os they ship with. Thus a mac that ships with 10.8.3 may be able to boot off 10.8.2 or even 10.8.1. A mac that shipped with 10.7.0 may very well be able to boot off 10.6.8. On a few occasions we've back-installed a machine that just barely shipped with a newer release of mac os to the latter, because people were using apps that wouldn't run on the new os or required a paid upgrade.

This also leads to a similar issue where a mac that shipped with 10.6.5 may or may not be able to boot off a retail 10.6.3 installer disc. But if you can install the os by using the mac in firewire target mode booted off an older mac, and then run the combo updater to bring it up to 10.6.8, it will then boot on its own and resume the updates etc.

Thanks for the reminder. (I've alway thought backwards-compatibility was limited to earlier versions of the same OS; I'm surprised to hear that it may actually cross OS lines, i.e. 10.7.0/10.6.8.)

It all depends on when the Mac was designed.

A Mac that was designed and released to manufacture when 10.6.8 was out will run 10.6.8 even if, say, 10.7.0 starts shipping by the time that Mac hits the retail stores. There's a bit of lag time between design and manufacture.

Also, sometimes Apple will ship older Macs (say, a non-Retina Macbook Pro) with newer operating systems even when the design hasn't changed. I just got the non-Retina Macbook Pro, and its design has not noticeably changed since 10.6; it will run 10.6.8 even though it shipped with 10.8.5.

Very interesting! Thanks.

So, is there any way to know in advance that the new OS X BCD Mac you're planning to buy will run OS X ABC, or is it more or less a crapshoot? Advance knowledge of a Mac's reversion backwards-capability could be invaluable info.

The original Mac mini was released in January, 2005. In August of that year, I bought the Rev B version—essentially the Rev A with more RAM—which had been released in July.

My mini came with OS X 10.4.2 installed. I was therefore surprised to find that it booted from a clone of my expired iMac's 10.3.7 installation. A little research revealed, though, that that was the current OS X version at the time the original Rev A was released.

artie, I spent over an hour trying to download the maverick upgrade (with my backup partition) but no dice. I had disconnected everything as instructed but then I thought that the partition is on a peripheral so maybe I should disconnect that too. I then tried to download to my HD. I went to www.apple.com/ca/OSX
which directed me to OS Mavericks. I little window said free upgrade which when clicked asked me for my apple ID and password. So far so good. After that the same window changed to install apps which when clicked which again asked for my ID and password. This time it wanted my credit card etc. so I gave up. Is Mavericks free or what? jaybass

It is free, but since you are downloading through the App Store you apparently need to meet that venue's requirements, one of which is that you register and provide a credit card for any future purchases (even if you have no intention of making any).

There may be a way to use the App Store without providing a credit card number, but that's another issue.

Can you delete your credit card number at will, or, unlike every vendor with which I deal by card (as opposed to PayPal), does it remain in Apple's files until your card expires and it changes?

You suggest there might be another way...pray tell and I'll think about it.
artie, I don't know if I can delete my card # The next time I'm near an apple store, I'll enquire about their requirements. jaybass

Take a look at the this Apple support document titled "Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, and Mac App Store account without a credit card."

Reading between the lines, and consulting various threads on the subject on Apple's discussion boards, it appears that you need to:
  1. ignore Apple's advice that "it is recommended to use only one Apple ID;"
  2. ignore the sentence which states "if you have registered your product or used any Apple services, you should follow this article to use an existing Apple ID with the iTunes Store or Mac App Store," and, instead,
  3. create a new Apple ID account by following the instructions revealed by clicking on the â–º Creating an account on a computer link.
Since Apple doesn't seem very enthusiastic about this approach, and I haven't done it myself, I can't actually recommend that you try it. I would probably just go ahead and use my existing Apple ID and supply the credit card information; later, after you've downloaded Mavericks, you can always log back into your account and remove the card information by following the instructions in iTunes Store: Changing your payment information.

When I was first asked for my apple ID, I entered it and they said I needed a new password with certain requirements which I did. I received an email to that effect.
Of course, I didn't know what you know or I might have gone that route. However, I'll wait awhile until I feel like disconnecting all my peripherals and try again. Thanks for that info. jaybass
