Go to java.com and check for an update.
If you allow it, it will automatically scan your system and advise whether it needs updating; if so, it will then offer you the download it thinks appropriate, as well as ask you whether you'd prefer such for a different system.

There was an update (for Firefox) just the other day and the disk image file is labeled: jre-7u45-macosx-x64.dmg .

Apple also had an update in mid-October:
About Java for OS X 2013-005
Java for OS X 2013-005 delivers improved security, reliability, and compatibility for Java SE 6. Java for OS X 2013-005 supersedes all previous versions of Java for OS X.
This release updates the Apple-provided system Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_65 and is for OS X versions 10.7 or later.

To expand on grelber's excellent info, Apple provided Java up to and including v6.x, while Oracle took over starting with v7.x . Depending on which Java-dependent apps you run locally on your Mac, you may need both. Different Java versions can be installed as independent packages on the same Mac.

If you have Java installed, make sure you disable it in your web browsers, except possibly for trusted sites. This is to avoid the serious security risks associated with web-based Java.

Same configuration as yours, fully updated, and when I navigate to /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app I find this .

(Visiting java.com won't help you, as it invokes a "feature" that doesn't exist in Snow Leopard, i.e. prior to Lion.)

I think this is the most recent Java update for Snowy users. (Software Update should tell you if you need it.)

Edit: I'm not 100% certain about what's up. The Java update to which I linked is dated in June, but there was an Oct update (that I can't find) that may have been the same one. (Let Software Update govern.)

artie,
I think THIS is the most recent Java update for Snowy users. (Software Update should tell you if you need it.) THIS is update 17 but Software Update does not mention any update. Seems like a contradiction to me. I'll refrain from downloading the Snowy users update unless someone tells me I need it. BTW, what version do you have?
Thank you all for your replies. jaybass

As I alluded to in my previous post, there are 8 main versions of Java extant, several of which you may need, depending on the requirements of the Java-dependent apps you use on your Mac. Currently only versions 6 and 7 are being updated for Mac OS X, the former by Apple, the latter by Oracle. Apple will no longer develop Java versions for Mac OS X, except for updates to its version 6. Oracle took over development of Java for Mac OS X from v.7 onward. With this in mind, the following updates are the most recent:

Last June, Apple released its 'update 17' for Java 6 (see second digit in version number), in different flavors for its different OSes. These updates are listed in Software Update, and include the one grelber referred to (incorrectly as from mid-October).
- Java 1.6.0_65 for Snow Leopard
- Java 1.6.0_65 for Lion and Mountain Lion.

Last October, Oracle updated Java 7 (see second digit in version number) with
- Java 1.7.0_45 for Lion and up.
Oracle Java updates are not listed in Software Update.

So there is no contradiction, but lots of confusion. Regardless of what I said above about possibly needing more than one version of Java, you may not be able to run the latest versions of Java 6 and 7 concurrently, because one or the other version may not be available for the OS version you're running. That said, the likelihood of that causing a problem for you is small.

Capisce? laugh

> BTW, what version do you have?

Java's version number system has always confused me.

The best I can do to answer your question is refer you to my screenshot of /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app.

If your screen looks the same as mine, you're up to date; if not, Software Update should be telling you that you need a newer version.

Edit: Found this: "Get Info" on /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app tells me that I'm running version 13.9.8, modified Sun, Oct 20, 2013.

Edit 2: > I'll refrain from downloading the Snowy users update unless someone tells me I need it.

If SU tells you that you need it, by all means, d/l it, and if SU does not say so, then you're probably up to date. (Why don't you take a look in /private/var/db/receipts and see if your Java receipts are the same as mine? [Paste the path into Finder > Go > Go to Folder....])

Edit 3: And, as alternaut has repeatedly stated, if you need Java for any reason, you need the latest version.

I'm confused.

This is what my receipts file looks like, and as you can see in About Java for Mac OS X v10.6 Update 17, Apple definitely released a Java for OS X 10.6 update in October, which I've been unable to find on their Website.

You're not the only one who is confused. But first: the modification date on the KB article you linked to refers to the article itself, NOT to the Java update discussed there. That doesn't preclude such an update, for indeed, Apple updated its Java to version 1.6.0_65 on October 15 with 'update 2013-005'. I incorrectly gave that one a June date, when Apple KB article DL1573 claims that Java for Snow Leopard was updated to 1.6.0_65 with 'update 17'.

However, several sources stated that a Snow Leopard version was also included with the October 2013-005 update, but its version number didn't change. The confusion spread further because Apple associated two dates with the Java 1.6.0_65 'update 17' for Snow Leopard. The first is June 18, and the second is October 15. Go figure. But the bottom line is that we're now at 1.6.0_65 for Java 6 from Snow Leopard and up.

If it makes a difference, the Snowy version is 1.6.0_65-b14-462.

And that's the version jaybass should be running!
