Can it be done?

MP4 video can be downloaded to USB thumb drive from a computer but apparently there's no way to get it onto an iPad. Suggestions?

If it can be loaded onto an iPad, how would one play it? Via iTunes?

If it is not too large you can email the MP4 as an attachment and open it on the iPad. If it is too large to eMail, copy the MP4 to iCloud and you can then access iCloud from your iPad. A third alternative would be to import the MP4 into iTunes and then synch iTunes with your iPad.

Apparently the MP4 file is too large (360 MB) to email.

Apparently the iTunes option wouldn't work. And iCloud isn't in their repertoire.

So, back to square one.

Why won't the iTunes option work? That's the normal way to move a video onto an iPad or iPod; I do it all the time.

No idea. The folk I asked the question for aren't especially computer-literate and work mostly with PCs; their only contact with Apple is via their iPhones and iPads — and I know zip about the latter.

I recommended that they find an Apple store in their vicinity to help them out of their dilemma.

While a visit to an Apple Store might help them, wouldn't it be worthwhile to see if they can't find some information online to do what they want, or—depending on their familiarity with iPads—to educate themselves a bit more about the device they (want to) use? A quick search yields the following two links (out of many more) that could help:

- iTunes 10 for Windows: Sync your device manually
- The Beginner’s Guide to iTunes

Merci. Duly noted and passed on.
Now to await the next page in the story.

Just be certain, is your friend aware that iTunes is Windows compatible?

Edit: Oops! Missed alternaut's link.

Oh dandy! After all that it would seem (or so I have obliquely informed) that the "video" is really not a movie but rather something like a PowerPoint slide show, with still photos progressing set to music — although I'm not sure how that was converted to an MP4 video.
More than that I don't know at the moment but will fill in the gaps as and when I find them out.
I apologize for apparently wasting everyone's time and good will.

Edit: I just saw a screen shot of the MP4 file's info panel — not only does it give the primary option of opening in iTunes, but the file's icon is the iTunes' icon. I advised them once again to educate themselves on such matters via the earlier recommended readings. C'est suffit!

Update:
Recommendations followed, but iTunes won't "take" the video because it apparently doesn't recognize the mpeg4 format.
Only option at this point is for my friends to find help local to them.

ITunes most definitely recognizes MPEG-4. Apple's Quicktime is an implementation of the MPEG-4 part 2 standard. But MPEG-4 is an evolving standard that encompasses a number of different implementations including DVD-HD and Blu-Ray (MPEG-4 part 10). ITunes is dependent on Quicktime and therefore it is not capable of handling Blu-Ray. For that you would need something like Toast 11 Titanium. If you were going to burn a disc you would also need a Blu-Ray capable burner, and Apple's Superdrive is not Blu-Ray capable either. So you need more details about your friend's file and possibly additional software and hardware to burn it to a disc. confused

if you install codecs, it can boost quicktime's vocabulary, which will make itunes work with other things, but unfortunately it won't sync them to a device it knows does not support them. (my most recent battle involved an appletv) since you can't upgrade the codecs on your ipad, you gotta transcode to something it can stomach

Thanks again for the input. My friends are going to have to work it out with help local to them (as noted earlier). The folk who created the video either are no longer available or really don't know how it was created. A very bizarre situation. Frustrating all around. C'est la vie.
