One wonders how this sort of thing might affect us as DNS users ...

To Our Readers: Our Web site was unavailable to some readers for a time on Tuesday. The disruption was the result of an external attack on our domain name registrar, and we are at work on fully restoring service. We regret if this has caused you any inconvenience. — The New York Times

You mean other than users being unable to access a certain site or domain or potentially having your queries to a legitimate site directed instead to a malicious look-alike site?

It doesn't affect Internet users (at least not any farther than hacked sites can't be visited).

What happened is that the NY Times uses a company called Melbourne IT to register their domain name. Melbourne IT has weak security, and people were able to break into the Melbourne IT servers and point the domain name nytimes.com to a different IP address.

Good info in both articles (PCWorld & Huffington Post).
Merci.
