Copy YouTube Video?

It has been a long time since I have done videos on my Mac, so I need some coaching before I can get started. I want to record a video of a speech that resides on YouTube. It is about 15 minutes long. I want to be able to record it to a DVD and then play it on my family room TV screen that is connected to a DVD player. Is there a simple way to do this? It is exclusively for private use in my home. Money is not involved. Can this be done?

Not sure if this is what you're looking. I use MacTubes. It is free. Not all YouTube Videos can be download, but most can. After it is downloaded I use Toast Titanium to burn a DVD

MacTubes is a YouTube video player and downloader. iTunes-like user interface and easy operation. You can create playlists and download video files.

Thank you for the referral. I tried it and couldn't download MacTubes from Macupdate.com. I was invited to join for $20.00 and I suspect that is how I get MacTubes. There were a lot of complaints by other users that MacTubes stops working after a single use. I decided to discontinue the effort and delete my personal information from the site. There was no way to do that. I had to send an email to "chad@macupdate.com" asking to be removed from the web site. I haven't heard back yet.

I just tried the MacUpdate d/l, and it worked just fine. (Unzipped, but didn't launch app.)

Visited the dev's Website, where it specifically says "free."

There's a bunch of recent complaints about the app having stopped working, though.

Ooops! I did download the folder from the web site, but that's all. When I tried to open it, nothing happened. Sorry for the incomplete report the first time. I was multitasking and failed to give a detailed report.

Also, I have now heard from them and they stated that they have deleted my information. That's to their credit.

I'm not following what you did at all, but that's unimportant.

Where did you see that $20/register thing? I wasn't asked, nor could I find it.

You can also get from Version Tracker. It is free and doesn't install anything else but a preference file from what I can see. There have been various problems over the years, but the developer has always fixed them. I downloaded a Jonathan Winters Video yesterday. It was a little tricky to use the first time for me, but from there on it is a snap. I don't believe you have to register for Macupdate or Version Tracker. Good Luck with your project
Also the Editors on Version Tracker give it 5 stars and call it spectacular and the user ratings give it 4 stars (I own no stock in the company, I am just a user)

Version Tracker is an old friend. It worked fine for me and the video file played nicely on my Mac. I burned a DVD with only the YouTube download and it also played nicely on my Mac. I tried it on my BlueRay DVD player attached to my TV and it did not work. I may need to burn it with a companion file that enables it, but I'm a novice at this and ran out of time to follow it up.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

I am guessing when it played on your computer, it was either playing on Quicktime or iTunes. Mostly likely it downloaded as a mp4 file. I use Toast for it has a special burning choice to be formatted and burn to be played as a regular DVD and played on DVD players. The version of toast I have can burn as blu ray or DVD.
It is a fairly expensive program. I have Toast 11 and it runs about 70-100 dollars.
I don't know about older versions etc. There may be other less expensive software. I don't know. Perhaps others on the forum can feel you in. I just know that it has to be converted, formatted etc ( I don't know the precise term) to be able to be played on DVD or Blu Ray. Good Luck

I used to have Toast and Jam, at least I believe that's what they were called, but that was a long time ago. I didn't know Toast still existed. You're spot on that that was my problem. Yes, I got the DVD to run on both QuickTime and iTunes on my Mac. Thanks for the followup. If I get into the same situation again, I'll look for Toast. I just Googled it and found Roxio's web site. I hadn't thought of Roxio for many years. They are offering Toast for $79.99. If I'd known that last Sunday, I'd have probably grabbed it, but now the pressure is off.

Sorry for some of my flaky comments earlier in this thread. I was under enormous pressure to do multiple things at the same time and I'm not good at that.

Regarding downloading audio or video from youtube. Once you start to download, go across to window and down to activity and you will see the file you're interested in, usually at the top but you can determine that from the MB size. Press option and double click the appropriate file and you will get your copy. From there, you can burn it or whatever you like.
Someone on this forum told me this quite sometime ago and it works.

Jay: Regarding your last message on this thread, will you please state specifically what software application is being used to download and what it is that is being downloaded? I've heard of multiple apps and procedures on this thread and I need some detailed coaching since it has been a very long time since I've done this kind of thing. Thanks.

OS 10.6.8 safari.
Google youtube video downloads...I chose "Blue Jasmine" official trailer. you don't need software, just click it then...window...activity, hold down option key and double click the trailer. This will result in a safari icon with HTML on it. You can then play it, or drag it onto a flash drive or whatever you like.

It didn't work for me, but I'm not a signed-in member of YouTube. When I pressed option and clicked on the screen of the item I selected, the screen went to the largest size on my 30" screen, but there was no HTML to click. Do I have to sign in to get that service? Also, I use MacOS 10.8.4 instead of 10.6.8. Does that also matter? I try to avoid signing in wherever I can because it often generates a lot of junk email. In this case, I'll do it if I have to.

I'm in 10.6.8 (non-YouTube member), and I just took a look-see... I control-clicked on the video and got a pop-up that enabled me to d/l an mp4 that plays in QuickTime Player 10.

Thanks, that's very helpful, but my current effort is trying to make one that will play on a BluRay DVD without the need for QuickTime or iTunes. I haven't had any luck with that yet. Your being able to get results without signing in is very encouraging and I'll keep trying to do things that way if possible.

You can download many (but not all) Youtube and other video clips from within Safari. One way of accessing available downloads is as Artie posted, by Control- or right-clicking the video window on a web page and selecting 'Download Video'.
Another is jaybass's, and works by opening the Activity window via Safari's Window menu, locating the proper window entry there (in case you've got more than one tab or window open in Safari), and then finding and Option-double-clicking the movie clip in the list of page components present. Movies may be recognized by their size, as they often run in the MBs, while most of the other items listed are in KB. You can get an easy interface for this when you install the Downloader option of RealPlayer, but it's not really necessary.

The two options I mentioned above may not both be available at the same time. Sometimes neither option is: web sites may code embedded videos in such a way that easy download is precluded, for instance by providing it in multiple small sequences. In such cases you might try a utility like Snapz Pro X (demo available), but that may not work any better either.

All that said, none of these ways of capturing videos on the web addresses (trans)coding them for recording/viewing on blueray disc. As mentioned by MarkG, you'd need a utility like Toast for that.

Thank you. What you said coincides with my experience the last few days. I kept trying the other methods in the hope that I wouldn't have to add yet another application to my already loaded Mac. By that I mean the icons in the Dock are getting smaller and smaller and smaller.

You might try organizing your icons in the dock by functional groups, and selecting (if you haven't already done so) 'Turn Magnification On' from the Dock menu (Apple menu).

Since JoBoy is running Mountain Lion, he won't find an Activity menu item in Safari's Window menu; that was eliminated in Safari 6.

Thank you. That is helpful. Getting back to the YouTube issue, I've never been able to find the Downloads and Activity menu items mentioned by you and the others. I use OSX 10.8.4. Finally, a couple of minutes ago, I went to my wife's Mac that still runs 10.6.8 and voila! They are present there. I'll never be able to do the things mentioned in this thread until I find the 10.8.4 equivalents of the 10.6.8 menu items. It's no wonder I haven't been able to duplicate the instructions from you and the others.

After posting the above, I opened the thread and found that DK beat me to the conclusion I had reached independently. Thank you, DK and thank you all others. I need to break it off for now, but I'll get back to it asap.

The Downloads window in Safari 6.x (which is what you have if you are in OS 10.8.x) is invisible unless you are downloading something or have previously downloaded something. It is not a window until you click on its disclosure arrow, which is located in the upper right corner of the Safari window itself, near the end of the address bar, somewhat below the button that says "Reader". The arrow is a downward pointing arrow, and during a download there is an animated blue progress bar. Again, you won't see it if nothing has been downloaded.

Virtual1: Thanks for the bookmark. It works great! Am I correct that I need Roxio's Toast ($80.00) if I want to burn the resulting MP4 to a CD or DVD and play it on a device that is not a computer?
