Tried to import a bogus xxx@aol.com account to Mac Mail and I got the message:

"Logging in to the AOL IMAP server "imap.aol.com failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct..."

It defaulted to the IMAP server. So, part of what users I know have been moaning about is losing AOL mail. Possibly they have removed POP to keep up with people using iPads and iPhones to get mail and people are losing mail this way:

She decided to use Google Mail. It was easier to hack import AOL to Google before they made it an option to import AOL mail. She may just keep the AOL account and just ditch having to use their obnoxious interface.

Thanks All!!!!

I am still using AOL by POP. When you set up an AOL address in Mail, it will default to IMAP, but that isn't because AOL defaults to IMAP; it's because the Apple programmers who wrote Mail default to IMAP.
