Lost Custom Ringtone After Update

I noticed that when I updated from iOS 6.1 to 6.1.1 and from 6.1.1 to 6.1.2 my custom ring tone had disappeared and had to be (re)installed.

Is this normal or just moi?

I just did this upgrade and my custom ringtones were maintained.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

I was afraid that might be the case, Ira.

While my problem is easily resolved, I know not what to do about to preclude the issue.

Perhaps I'll check with a Genius the next time I'm in an Apple store.

In the past when I have updated iPhones via iTunes, I have lost custom ringtones. Upon reflection, the loss has not happened with over the air updates of iOS 5 and on.

One unusual situation: my wife's iPhone went into a "deep sleep" and auto-shut down overnight after being updated. The next morning it took a couple minutes for the phone to wake up. Almost seemed to be a brick. A few scary minutes, but all seems to be OK now.

Ira,

I presume OTA includes both WiFi and via the telephone carrier. Correct?

At any rate, my update was via WiFi.

Since my last post, my Google searches have revealed many assorted post-update issues, including missing/lost custom ringtones. I did not find a definitive cause of such behavior nor a universal solution, but most were able to put things to right (usually by reinstalling from a backup).

BTW, what is “deep sleep” and what is the fix?

Generally OTA iOS upgrades and updates require a WiFi connection as do installs/updates of large apps. Only smaller downloads are supported on the 4G LTE networks.

Thanks, joemikeb, gottit.

For today, I hope to discover the cure/fix for "Deep Sleep". And for that matter, (even) recognize if & when that occurs. wink

This is not necessarily a cure but generally it will work as a fix, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button at the top of the phone and the Home button (the round button at the bottom of the screen) until the iPhone shuts down and restarts.

The only cure I can suggest is a full reset.

That was my terminology for an iPhone that would not wake up! smirk

Some of the above postings indicate how to overcome this.
