mountain lion io errors not logged?

I think I've had this issue with 10.7 as well. I used to be able to go into console and check in the System log and it would show any of the "disk0s2 io error" messages indicating a failing hard drive. (usually someone brings in a computer that frequently pinwheels, and has a failing hdd)

But I'm not seeing these messages in console under 10.7 or 10.8. Known issue? Somewhere else to look?

FWIW I just did a search in Console for disk0s2 and found
Code:
9/5/12 5:34:50.000 PM kernel[0]: BSD root: disk0s2, major 1, minor 3
So apparently at least some of those messages are still being logged in OS X 10.8.1.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

But that's not an io error message. The kernel is simply stating that it has equated the BSD root (i.e., "/") with the disk volume formerly known only as "disk0s2".

(Edit: this message is a reply to joemikeb's, not virtual1's.)
