OS 10.5.8 UnrarX
Is there any reliable software that will convert rar files to avi etc? I have tried the above and it gave a password which after 3 tries did not work. The response to my email said they would get back to me in 24 hrs...twice. jaybass

You can't "convert" a RAR file because a RAR file is like a .zip file or a .sit file; it is a compressed archive that contains other files. There are many Mac programs that can uncompress a .rar archive. Stuffit Expander can do it. So can the free The Unarchiver, which is available on the Mac App store (it's what I use).

Note that the Unarchiver page tacit links to also has direct download links (under the heading 'Other links') to both the App Store version and a version for legacy Macs.

According to the unarchiver, I need snow leopard which I don't have. I know should have said open instead of convert. Thanks for your reply.

Scroll a littl further down the page Tacit referenced and you will find this link to the legacy versions

Thanks Joe, I never read the whole page. I have just downloaded TheUnarchiver3.2_legacy.zip I wasn't aware of a 'legacy' version. Lets see how it performs. jaybass

You are confused? And I am crazy and confused? Must be old age. Looking back to the link, perhaps I should have referred to the older mac X version as opposed to the legacy one. Am I on the right track? If you are alluding to something else, please enlighten me. jaybass

It's just that the legacy version was mentioned here before you noticed the issue with the 'regular' one.
