Is there a way for me to read e-books from Amazon on my Mac without owning and Nook, Kindle, etc.? An application maybe, preferably free? With a browser?

There is a free Kindle app in the App Store called "Kindle" that should do the job. I have used the Kindle app on on my iPhone and iPad and they work well. There is a Nook app for the iPhone/iPad but no equivalent app for the Mac. You still have to have an account and purchase the books.

If you're seriously into e-books, you might want to check out Calibre (freeware). It's way more (and bigger) that just a reader and may thus be overkill, but you may like the added functionality.

Amazon's own free Kindle for Mac, which I have seen in use in zero computers to date.

I have the Kindle for Mac app, though I use it for checking Kindle books rather than reading them (I write for Kindle, which helps pay the rent).
