In addition to Perian, I also grabbed OnyX (Lion) — unfortunately only avaiable at the moment in beta (version 2.4.6b1).
Any experience with that item?
I'm rather leery of beta versions, so I'd like some feedback on same and this item in particular before considering installing it.

OnyX 2.4.5 is available for Lion and it's not a beta.

And it was just announced that development on Perian will be ending.

OnyX is one of those utilities that can do a lot, some of it cosmetic, some of it trouble-shooting. It is worth having. It is safe in and of itself, although with it the user could get into things they don't know about.

Keep it around, if for no other reason than to empty the Trash those few times an item refuses to be disposed of.

Jon (jchuzi) noted that in an earlier thread — which is why I went out and got it.

RE On a Mac since 1984.
Me too. And I still have a whole whack of floppy disks (1.44MB).

D/l'ing Perian immediately probably wasn't necessary.

Even though the original development team is discontinuing support, they're open-sourcing the code, so it's altogether possible that development will be continued by others, and even if further development is a dead issue, the final version of Perian will likely be available for d/l for as long as it's applicable.

Indeed! I've already had the necessity to employ that feature. Serendipity.
