I am now unable to convert Word .docx files even though I was able to do so two days ago. When I tried to open a 381 KB document today by double-clicking I got a dialogue box that said: "There is not enough memory or disk space to convert this document."

However, I have 205.56 GB of disk space available and no other applications are running (2GB RAM). As well, it is giving the same message for a 182 KB .docx file that it easily opened two days ago.

I also tried by opening the XML Converter and dragging the file. It said, "Conversion Failed" and had this log:

Open XML Converter Log
==================================

Start time: 2012-05-08 11:40:02 -0700
Converting file: /Users/myname/Desktop/MAP Guide.docx
objc[213]: Class NLAssertionHandler is implemented in both /Applications/Open XML Converter.app/Contents/SharedSupport/wordcvtr and /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office Converter Support/Open XML for Word.framework/Versions/12/../../../MicrosoftComponentPlugin.framework/Versions/12/MicrosoftComponentPlugin. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
Conversion failed

What are you trying to convert the document to?
Every so often that happens to me but resolves when I close Word (2011) then reopen the document.
Try opening the .docx item in Text Editor and/or delete the x from the .docx extension.

Conversion is always to .doc

I have Office 2004 which needs conversion from .docx, and I have been operating this way ever since Word 2011 came out but have only now experienced a problem. It just seems curious that it suddenly decided to stop working the way it was a couple of days ago.

Deleting the x doesn't change the behaviour.

Does this happen if you log into a test account? You can put a .docx file in /Users/Shared and access it from the test account in order to try it. If it works in the test account, a possible culprit is ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.openxml.chart.app.plist.

Alternatively, quit Open XML Converter, move that plist to the desktop, relaunch Open XML Converter, and try it again. If the problem is gone, trash the bad plist. If not, quit the app and put it back.

I only have these two Preferences related to converting Office Documents. They're both located in: UserMe/Library/Preferences

com.microsoft.OfficeConverter.plist
com.microsoft.openxml.excel.app.plist

I tried two different accounts - one that I use for visitors and another I use for a community association. Neither would convert with XML Converter. Interestingly, the document opens in Pages, except that it shows these two Import Warnings.

- Floating objects inside table cells aren’t supported and were removed.
- Only text boxes can be linked to form a text flow. Shapes are no longer linked.

I've also re-installed XML Converter after downloading from Mactopia. Still no desired result.

EDIT - Additional Info: I just tried an Excel .xlsx document and it converted/opened without a problem.

For lack of a better suggestion, have you checked the directory with Disk Utility (Repair Disk) or a third party utility such as Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro?

I used Disk Utility to do a Permissions Repair and then Disk Warrior for a Directory rebuild (using scavenge), and also did a PRAM clear.

I've also been digging a bit deeper but, instead of getting clearer, things are muddier. I opened some older .docx files with no problems. They were smaller and from other senders.

However, the "other senders" part still mystifies me. While the two that won't open are from the same person, one of the the files opened quit readily a couple of days ago....but now won't.

Is this happening with only the one document or all .docx documents? If it is the former then there may well be something wonky with the one document the converter cannot handle which is known to happen occasionally.

As far as the Pages conversion goes, I frequently get warnings when I use Pages to open any but the simplest .docx files, so i can't say your warnings are unusual. I sometimes have better results using NeoOffice for .docx conversions. Yesterday I installed a new version of an old friend, Nisus Writer Pro 2.0.2, which uses either the same Mac OS X conversion used by Pages or the included LibreOffice converter which is supposedly slower but more complete. So far I would have to say the LibreOffice converter is living up to its claims.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Although it may not be directly related to the issue here, Microsoft put out yet another security update/patch (14.2.2) late yesterday.

It's only happening with two documents from the same sender. The part that is odd, though, is that one of these documents was opening fine a couple of days ago. This makes me wonder if something else has gone wonky.

Thanks, but I think that one is just for Office 2011, I'm Office 2004...hence the need for the XML Converter. However, looking for the update pointed out another problem. My Microsoft AutoUpdater is not functioning.

Now I'm wondering if there is a connection between this malfunction and the XML malfunction.

The 14.2.2 update (and its predecessors) deal with MS Office for the Mac 2008 and 2011, as well as PC applications back to 2003.

I also had had a problem with Microsoft AutoUpdate. I solved it by trashing ~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.autoupdate2 and ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.autoupdate2.plist.

That solved the Microsoft AutoUpdate problem. Thanks. One down , one to go.

I've now received another document from the same sender and it has opened, albeit not with all the formatting intact, so I'm assuming the problems are originating there.

However, we must have fixed something along the way as the document that had been opening, then decided not to, has started opening again.

I'm going to focus on the sender and, if I learn anything, I'll post.
