no StartupItems folder?

I've ran into multiple 10.6.8 machines coughing up errors trying to count items in /System/Library/StartupItems/, only to find the folder isn't there. Is there a known issue here from a certain upgrade path maybe?

I have that folder although it is empty. My upgrade path has always been via Software Update, not the Combo.

I don't have that folder either....and am not aware of any problems resulting from its absence.

EDIT: With all the information added by others, I've checked elsewhere too:

/Library/StartupItems exists but is empty
~/Library/StartupItems does not exist

I looked, and found the folder--it was empty. I closed the finder window, then thought I'd go back and look to see when it was created, thinking it might have migrated from my old Mac, it was gone!

My bad, Macintosh HD/Library/startupitems exists, is empty, and predates my iMac & Snow Leopard.

System/library/startupitems doesn't exist.

On my systems
  • /System/Library/Startupitems exists and is dated the day I installed OS X 10.7 and is empty
  • /Library/Startupitems exists, predates the installation of Lion and has a floder labeled BRESINKx86Monitoring in it (probably deft over from the last time I ran Marcel Bresinks Hardware Monitor)
  • ~/Library/Startupitems does not exist

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Not to be outdone...

OS X 10.6.8 (Build 10K549), which, I'm pretty certain, is the product of a clean install:
  • ~/Library StartupItems does not exist
  • /Library/StartupItems/LexSleeperX (That's from my Lexmark printer, which doesn't even install in 10.6.x, so I'm not the least bit certain of how it got there.)
  • /System/Library/StartupItems is empty
  • /System/Library/StartupItems (from old Mac) (*) is empty
(*) Edit: "from old Mac" items are the product of checking the "Other files and folders" box when you import data.

for everyone that has such a missing folder, try a verbose boot and see if it complains, it does here.

I did a Verbose Boot (good thing I have a printed list of Startup Key Combinations) but...keeping in mind I have no idea what a verbose boot is...my machine didn't seem to "complain".

I got a black screen and a lot of information appeared. Shortly thereafter, it went to the regular log-in window. I logged in and noticed that it took a while longer than normal to get to the desktop.

I initiated shutdown and there was a brief bit of black screen with some information (4 or 5 lines) before the shutdown occurred.

I restarted as normal and, after the login window, the advance to the desktop was almost instantaneous.

Edit: I checked System/Library and still don't have a StartupItems folder.

My desktop has two folders, in the main Library and System/Library (like Joe Mike). Both are empty.

That's expected; when you boot into verbose mode you stay there until you shut down (or restart?), i.e. you get a verbose shutdown.

I am now about on my dozen'th mac running 10.6 that has a console log stuffed with errors on that folder not being found. I'm pretty certain at this point that it's a bug related to machines that are migrated from an older mac to a newer one. The one I'm looking at this moment is an imac made in late 2010, so it should have shipped with 10.6.
