I am at my wits end! My MacBook Pro (MacBookPro2,2 2006) is constantly crashing and/or freezing. Everything was perfectly fine until I installed the 10.7.2 update. Then things started to get progressively worse. Now I can't go 15 minutes without the system freezing up or crashing. It crashes 20 times a day or more and is completely unusable at this point. I really need to get work done and don't know what else to do.

It doesn't seem to matter what applications are open. I thought at first maybe it was Safari or Mail but I've had it hang or crash with just the Finder open. Sometimes it just freezes up yet, if iTunes is playing music, the music will continue to play in the background but you can't interact with anything. Sometimes the mouse pointer will still move and sometimes it won't. Sometimes I'll get the spinning beachball of death. Other times it will just instantly restart on its own. A couple times the screen just rolled to grey then died. I never get a crash report that I can post or send to Apple.

I am very technically proficient and have done absolutely everything I can think of at this point including:

* Resetting PRAM.
* Repairing disk permissions and running a disk check
* Ran TechToolPro and everything came back OK.
* Updated all software and removed any weird kernal extensions.
* Unhooked any attached peripherals.
* Tried different networks or switching to wired ethernet.
* Logged in with Shift key down so no extra software loaded.

The ONLY thing that seems to work is starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key at boot. Which is what led me to think that maybe some rogue kernal extensions were to blame but I removed all but the blessed Apple extensions. Safe Mode loads only the most basic system software so is not very usable. The fact that it runs OK here makes me believe it must be a bug in Apples 10.7.2 update but who knoes what part since so much of the OS is not loaded in Safe Mode.

I've also tried running Apple Hardware Tests (AHT) but can't get it to run for the life of me. I followed another postwhere we copy the .diagnostics folder into /System/Library/CoreServices from the original software discs that came with the computer but holding down the "D" key on startup still doesn't invoke the tests. Won't run off the CD either. I get some weird circle with a slash through it. Going to take it in to the Genius Bar tomorrow and have them run the hardware tests. I'll report back after but I don't feel too sure they're going to have a good answer.

A side issue now is that, after all this, my MacBook Pro takes over half an hour to boot each time. It appears to be doing a Safe Boot no matter what even though I don't hold down the Shift key at startup. I always get the progress bar under the Apple logo and I think it is doing a fschk each time. But when it finally comes up it's not actually in Safe Boot mode. It never used to do this and I can't get it to stop. With all the crashes and now this incredibly long startup each time I'm about to throw this thing out the window.

I've read hundreds of other posts across the Internet with like experiences but no good answers. A lot of people seem to think it is an Nvidia graphics card related issue or a discrete graphics issue but my older machine doesn't have swithable graphics and it's card is ATI. But I do sometimes get strange graphic artifacts on the screen before it crashes and some Apps have lines through their interfaces so I'm wondering if the latest system update screwed up graphics drivers?

I'm posting here in the hopes that someone, anyone, can help me!!! I think Lion 10.7.2 has serious bugs and is one of the worst updates Apple has ever released.

Is anyone else having similar problems and does anyone out there have a solution?!!

Hi, and welcome to FineTunedMac. smile

Sorry if this is a bit simplistic, but have you tried running or, as the case may be, re-running the OS X Lion Update 10.7.2 Client Combo?

Have you applied the appropriate firmware update or this one? I'm not sure which applies to your model because I found two MacBook Pros that fit your description.

I don't think it's 10.7.2 itself; I haven't had the problems you describe, and I suspect your severity of problems likely isn't normal or else we'd have heard about it.

It definitely does sound like some kind of software conflict, since starting in Safe mode resolves the crashes. Have you looked at the crash log to see if there's anything useful in there?

tho it's not sounding like a hardware problem, I'm curious why you aren't able to get the hardware test to run. Try holding down A instead of D for diagnostics. Make sure your firmware doesn't have boot selection locked - try booting first holding option to see if the boot picker loads or asks for a password.

Hey,

well i hade the same symptoms, things becoming progressively worse, with lot of crashes, no crash reports,...... Until it was practically impossible to do anything after the startup. In Safe mode, everything was ok, no crashes.
I found a solution on the net that works for me. Apparently, it has something to do with files in the Trash (as strange as this may sound). Open an Terminal window and type:
sudo rm -rf. ~/.Trash
You will have to type your admin password to proceed. This command does empty the trash, and after that, everything is normal again, no crashes at all for the last 3 hours.

Hope this helps for you too

Hans

Also, usually sudo isn't needed for the user's ~/.Trash
instead, just hold the option key while selecting Empty Trash in Finder.

Thirdly, it's always better to list the trash contents beforehand, to see what's in there, and find out why they would present a problem at all (if any)... rather than just blindly deleting unknown items.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Unfortunately, none of this is working. Don't know why the diagnostics don't kick in when the "D" key is held down but I imagine it's related to the portion of my post where the progress bar comes up every time on boot for half an hour. It is doing a fschk because there probably is directory or partition damage and probably ignores the "D" key.

I'm sure this is a side effect of all the crashes I've had lately as it didn't originally do an fschk each time when all the problems started. But to make sure directory damage wasn't the cause of the problem I went ahead and wiped the entire drive, reinstalled the whole OS, apps, and... same !@#$% problem this morning! Goes to all black screen and then hangs. I have to force restart again.

I did manage to find and download the Apple Service Diagnostic disc and ran that. Performed 10 loops of tests overnight and everything came back perfect so I really don't think hardware or memory is to blame.

And yes, I have the latest firmware installed for my machine. Again, my machine is about 6 years old at this point. Lion isn't the snappiest but still ran perfectly fine under 10.7.1. I am more and more convinced that 10.7.2 is the problem. Everything started going south after this update. And there have beeen TONS of reported problems from other people on this if you do a Google search for "10.7.2 constantly hanging crashing".

I don't have any files in my trash and regularly empty it. At this point I am at a complete loss. I'm just praying that the imminent release of 10.7.3 will fix these problems.

UGH!

I'm in the same boat and am trying this as a last option before my iMac is hauled off to the repair shop. Eight Plus years since ive had that need.

Can you elaborate on what exactly you did that worked? I understand the Recovery Mode but what did you do once in there? I've done basically anything you can do from there...

Of the options available, I reinstalled the OS from Apple's server. Took a couple of hours.

As I understand it, Apple's servers offer only the latest version of OS X, so you re-installed 10.7.2...correct?

Well, I completely reinitialized my entire hard drive and started from scratch with the emergency flash drive I created from the Lion install. Then, just last night, reapplied the 10.7.2 Combo update. Not sure if this is going to stick or not but I did get one crash already that FINALLY produced a crash report.

My gut has been telling me this is graphics or graphics driver related given other reports around the web as well as the strange streaks of pixels that show up in various windows. This report seems to reinforce that. Anyone?

This crash report smells to me like a panic being triggered by a hardware problem with the Mac's graphics hardware. I would suggest taking the Mac in for service.

Apple Service Diagnostics (ran 10 loops overnight) and a trip to the Apple Genius Bar says no. Graphics hardware is fine.

Weird. Graphics driver problem, perhaps?
