The other night, after visiting Many Tricks, I found a manytricks.com (Plug-ins) item in the above captioned location.

My first reaction was to look in /Library/Internet Plug-ins and ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins to see what was up, but both locations were empty, and neither I nor Peter and Rob of Many Tricks, who are as mystified as I am, have been able to reproduce the item.

Prior to this incident and since I've seen only Cache, Cookies, and Cache, Cookies items in "Privacy," and I'm wondering whether the Plug-ins item was a hiccup or some as yet unexplained reality?

Anybody?

I can't provide any rigorous explanation or anything, but now i think i know from where Safari is deriving that particular "Plug-in" info. Have a look in the ~/Library/Caches/QuickTime/downloads/ folder for a TOC.plist file.

And/or just run this terminal command:

defaults read ~/Library/Caches/QuickTime/downloads/TOC

It seems to be storing URLs pointing to online movie (.mov) or sound (.wav) files. The items labeled "Plug-in" displayed in the 'Cookies and other website data' list correspond to domains of those URLs. Just delete (or clear) the TOC.plist and voila... no more plugins showing.

[may as well dump all the .qtch files in that downloads hierarchy too... unless any correspond to some video you view frequently.]

Thanks for the insight.

Code:
Artie-s-Computer-4:~ artie$ defaults read ~/Library/Caches/QuickTime/downloads/TOC
2012-01-08 02:51:46.323 defaults[1553:903]
Domain /Users/artie/Library/Caches/QuickTime/downloads/TOC does not exist
Artie-s-Computer-4:~ artie$

On the other hand, though, that file does exist...contents or no contents, as the case may be:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict/>
</plist>

Does that mean anything to you?

(Edit: I'll keep an eye peeled to see what, if anything, turns up in that file.)

Oops! I don't know where my head was at last night, but I just remembered that I've never, ever used QuickTime, and, as a matter of fact, it hasn't even existed on my deuced Mac(hina) in at least a coupl'a years.

What application do you use to view MPEGs (as opposed to WMV files)?

I don't think I've ever watched an MPEG, but I'm not certain, since I'm not even certain what an MPEG is.

If the issue ever came up, though, I think the answer is VLC.

I'll check out VLC. Never heard of it, but it seems to offer something for all OSs.

Well, are there still any 'Plug-in' items remaining in your list then? (and what are the creation/modified dates on that TOC.plist?)

Think maybe i'll visit the manytricks website and see what appears on my Mac. Any particular page you would suggest? [did you play any media file(s) there?]

edit: just went to the main page, and they didn't even so much as 'cookie' me. [an entry did appear labeled cache, but it went away after the usual ⌘⌥E ]

Which list, please?

> (and what are the creation/modified dates on that TOC.plist?)

Created 1-2-12 and modified 1-5-12; it looks like Yasu (which I've found clears some caches that shouldn't be cleared just because they're there) cleared it.

Butler, which hasn't left me a "Plug-in" item other than that one time, just left me a "Cache" item, too.

See post #1 (and the thread's title).

End of story then. [that's where the plug-in you asked about in post #1 was hiding.]

Probably you visited some page with a media (movie or sound) file.

Oh... That list! (Sorry, but "list" was a bit obscure.)

I dunno... I hit -⌥-E a million times a day without even looking at what I'm clearing.

I don't recall ever visiting such a page on the Many Tricks Website, and, in fact, I just got that cache entry without clicking on anything on or navigating away from the Many Tricks home page. (Nothing in TOC.plist, or would that be totally unexpected?)

Edit: I'll try to keep an eye out and see what, if anything, winds up in TOC.plist during my meandering around the Internet.

Update:

I just found ytimg.com/Plug-ins in "Privacy." (Edit: It appeared when I viewed a YouTube video.)

Safari Cookies identifies it as a Flash cookie, and it does not appear in TOC.plist...

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict/>
</plist>

A Simon's Cat fan film is the one (and I just duplicated my experience).

I've got Flip4Mac installed.

Edit: By the way... Sorry for omitting this info from my original post.

All i get from viewing that viddy is a "ytimg.com" cache (and TOC.plist was left bare), so perhaps Flip4Mac is convincing Safari that a plug-in should be displayed as well. ::shrug::

Oops... I also had a ytimg.com cache item, but I had ⌥--E'd it away, so it slipped my mind.
