10.6.8 combo being ornery

The last 6 or so times I've needed to run the 10.6.8 combo to repair the OS on a machine after doing repairs, I've gotten the same result. (this is while booted off another 10.6.8 installed os that's working properly) The installer puts a yellow triangle on the built-in hard drive, and when I select it, it says the volume does not meet the requirements for the installation. It doesn't elaborate, and there isn't anything helpful in the installer log file either.

This specific error, and other errors you can get when trying to select a volume to install to with OS X's installer, are notoriously unhelpful and non-specific, and in many cases I've found they are blocking installation for arbitrary and sometimes downright false reasons. (such as telling me that I can't start my mbp off an APS-partitioned hard drive)

These checks are in the installer itself, not the installation package, so I doubt there's anything in the package I can tweak to get around the checks that are done at this stage. Does anyone have any ideas on how to force an installation? I'm trying to use Pacifist right now and see how well that will go, but there's bound to be some post-installation-scripts that run after the installation, and I don't think Pacifist will run those, so I'm not sure what to expect for results.

Your problem sounds familiar, and if my memory serves me, I ran into it when I tried to re-install the 10.6.8 Combo on a volume that had already had the 10.6.8 v 1.1 Combo installed.

Hope this helps.

Ordinarily, Installer would have complained that a later version of OS X was installed, but I guess the v 1.1 thing was an uncontemplated oddity.

ahh, I bet I was trying to install the first version of it. Why do they do this? Why can't they just call it 10.6.9?

To save then from having to go the 10.6.10 route if a further update became necessary?
