Good Lord! I've just managed to open a winmail.dat file for the first time ever.

I downloaded this freeware application, which unzipped the attachment and revealed the 8page .pdf within.

Yes, I did know the sender and yes, I did trust him not to send me and all other recipients a virus/bug. He's the CEO of a large grain trading company.

Might help others with .dat attachments which you trust?

(If I've put this post in the wrong place, apologies, no doubt it will be moved to the right place as necessary.)

Now I just wish I had an "in" to .wmv files which my brother attaches now and them.

You didn't look far enough. Go here and you will find, on the left side of the page, the free version. You only pay if you need the "Pro" version and, if you are just viewing the videos, you don't need it.

I've been using the free version for years.

I must be missing some salient in your plaint.
Do you not have Windows Media Player plugin, Flip4Mac? If not, head over to Windows Media Components for QuickTime - by Flip4Mac.

No, I don't have that Windows component.

I notice that everyone is ignoring my inital post about .dat files.

this is a tough crowd/room here y'know. you're going to have to do better than that if you want to raise an eyebrow in these parts.
