On my old iMac (OS 9) I used to be able to put an alias to my printer (Lexmark E120) on the Desktop by which I could bring up a printing status/control panel and such. I don't see a way to do this in OS X (10.7.1) on my new iMac.

I also can't figure out how to select/prevent printing (in whole or in part) of Web info in the 4 corners of a page printed from a website; there are no settings regarding same.

Any ideas?

Bear in mind that I'm using Snow Leopard, so this may not exactly match Lion.

My Epson apps are stored in the Application folder under Epson. You could look for Lexmark. If you find it, you can make an alias.

Starting in Snow Leopard, most of the printing options were not visible unless you clicked the triangle to the right of the Printer popup menu in the Print dialog box. I assume that that's the same in Lion.

Not exactly?! Not at all.

The only place I can find reference to it is under ./Library/Printers.

The Printer popup menu has no triangle.

Where to next?

grelber,

In case "Start a print job on the Mac and manage its options" and "Manage the printer queue and printer dock icon" in this knowledge base article might be of use - OS X Lion: Overview of printing.

Does the print sheet offer options to Show / Hide Details?

I checked out the KB article, but it didn't resolve my quandary.

Show/Hide Details: It was sitting there and is probably the only button/choice I never tried. I can in fact remove the header and footer stuff; at some point I'll see if I can make that default.

So, merci beaucoup.

I'm still in a quandary as to how I might put the printer on the Desktop.
Would it be safe to go into the Library where the app is stored, make an alias of app and put that on the Desktop? Or perhaps make a duplicate copy of the app, put that in Applications, then put an alias on the Desktop?
Or would these be dangerous things to do? Keep in mind that Apple advised/warned that messing with the Library is a no-no, which is why they hid it in Lion.
(I'm going to post a similar inquiry in my Firefox re QuickTime thread.)

you should be able to make an alias and put that on the desktop without much worry.

Roger is right. Apple doesn't want you to alter Library but placing an alias doesn't alter anything. All you are doing is making it possible to access the desired app from a different location.

grelber,

I am not clear about what printing information you would like to see from a
  • Desktop icon versus the
  • Printer icon in the dock for Mac OS X 10.7.x.

From the section titled "Manage the printer queue and printer dock icon," at OS X Lion: Overview of printing
it appears that you should be able to see
  • Status
  • Resume Printer
  • Printer Setup
  • Options
  • Show All Windows
  • Hide
  • Quit
  • Number of print jobs in the queue
  • Delete
  • Hold
  • Job Info
  • Resume Printer
  • Supply Levels
  • A yellow tag indicating an issue with the printer

Let us know what other printing information you want to see.

Let us know that you have reviewed the pictures and information provided at the link provided in this post.

Back up everything you can't afford to lose: documents, mail, movies, music, photos, and other data and settings.

I was able to add the printer alias to the Desktop.

As noted in an earlier post, I found that details page and was able to alter the items I wanted to and successfully print.

So, many thanks all.
