Another Kernel Panic?

I apologize for just diving in here, because I can't even really follow the discussion, but I've been having horrendous problems too, since installing the 10.6.8 update. My screen started ever more frequently decomposing into pixelated, off-set. dots, dashes and slashes, then freezing me out and going 2/3rds black and 1/3 solid white.

I was more successful working in safe mode, but problems returned, and when I subsequently tried starting up with the install disk (via the option key), the disk would sound like it was spinning up, but then eject itself! I finally did manage to start up from the optical drive, although I'm not quite sure how, in order to run the disk utility.

Permission repairs all along the way repeatedly generated copious numbers of Java and Airport errors. Shutting down USB connections made no difference.

I managed to download and install the latest (Java fixer?) update, and after trashing my Photoshop CS5 preferences last weekend, all seemed well! Unfortunately, the slash/dot screen resurfaced again tonight. I have a sense that there's a problem running Safari/Airport and Photoshop/Bridge at the same time, and/or a problem precipitated by my Wacom monitor & drivers, but I'm current on all my software.

I did eventually get a kernel attack at startup, and was able to copy the following, before even that screen decomposed past the point of deciphering text (I may have confused some zeroes and eights):

panic ( cpu Ø caller 8x558271): "unable to find driver for this platform: \ACPI\".\n"@\SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.3.12/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp: 1389

Debugger called <panic>

ØSD process name corresponding to current thread: Unknown

Darwin Kernel Version 10 Fri. Feb

A couple of the system profiler logs seem to indicate problems. I'm not sure if any of them are relevant, (or what they all mean), but I could post anything that might be useful, if I can figure out how much personalized info it might be wise to obscure.

They include what are apparently parsing errors, sleep failure codes, airport links down, system shut downs for various numerical causes, NVDA problems (like "Display-B: Not usable" or "system sleep prevented by PXS1"). Wacom's tablet monitors have always had sleep prevention problems, but none which made everything go haywire in the past.

Alas, I'm deathly afraid of opening up the Terminal window, so I guess I'm really just posting to let ryck and others know that new system 10.6.8 problems may not be unique to his set-up, or his hardware. My current Big Plan is to confine multi-tasking to my laptop till Apple issues its next update.

Aaargh! frown

A comment in another thread leads me to suspect that you installed the 10.6.8 Delta Update, not the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update COMBO.

Regardless of which incarnation of the update you've already installed, I suggest that you reinstall it using the above link; reinstalling (with) the Combo has been a "miracle cure" any number of times in the past.

Good luck.

That's a real ray of sunshine, compared to my default plan! Many thanks, the download is already underway.

Terminal has, over the years, gained an undeserved reputation as something to be feared. (I had to get past it myself.)

True, it can do you real harm if you don't know what you're doing, but when the UNIX guys (Hal Itosis, Virtual1, ganbustein...) around here present you with a Terminal command, and you enter it with copy and paste, you have nothing to fear but a possible end to your issues.

You said you ran "disk utility;" if that doesn't mean "Repair Disk," you ought to run it, at the very least, before reinstalling the update. DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius would be preferable, though.

I can't speak about the Airport messages but I can for the Java issue. I get those as well and the issue has been analyzed by experts in this forum, with the conclusion that they can be ignored.

I was once in the same place but I now heartily endorse artie's thought.

I have gone from the same "deathly fear" to reaching the point where I welcome their suggestions for retrieving information using Terminal because it has so often helped them develop solutions.

Thanks all, especially for your encouragement about using the Terminal (I can remember circling around our family's first computer for about a year too).

I did do a disk repair from my original install disk with the Disk Utility, but unfortunately, my Tech Tool Pro 5 is nowhere to be found. Even trying to control the start up disk from the key board was courting disaster before I finally managed the first 10.6.8 update.

Alas, lightning struck quickly after trying the Combo Updater too. I had a crash with nothing but iTunes on deck, playing Foo Fighters while I occupied myself on the other side of the room. I returned to a flickering gray screen, which turned into a stalled, disintegrated screen saver when I moved my mouse. The music kept on playing though, till I moved the mouse again (although the cursor wasn't visible to me). That was that.

I shut down with the power button, then restarted and got a group of diagnostic messages including:

A Problem Advisory
A "Diagnostic and Usage Messages" Report generated for transmission to Apple
A Console Log

I'll post the Apple report in a separate comment, assuming it's the most relevant. Should I post the others the others too, for your (kind and patient!) inspection? I've got a couple photos of what Apple's Cosmos screen saver ended up looking like, but I'm not sure whether I should expect the actual images to show up in the Preview window, rather than just the URL with image tags, so I decided not to muck things up unnecessarily.

Here are a few of my particulars.

I have a nagging feeling that my Wacom Tablet, which refused to sleep in under Tiger & Leopard may be exacerbating, if not creating, the problems. My driver is up to date, though. Could the fact that I'm using a 32 bit display be a factor?

Well, I was going to paste up the "Diagnostic and Usage Messages" report destined for Apple, but Yikes! I didn't realize just how long it was till I tried previewing and posting. FineTuned just sat there groaning under the weight of it, and I've hopefully managed to put it out of its misery in time. I can take a shot at dividing the monster up, but in case it's also the least useful piece of the puzzle, here instead is the not inconsiderable Console Message (Log?) -- which is pretty much a tell-all exposé about how I spent my holiday weekend and the aftermath. I'll have to rely on your collective kindness, if it includes any embarrassing revelations. The "You Have A Problem" report is shorter, but it also looked like it didn't have much of note to say either. But I could be wrong!

In the following, I have replaced the official name of my computer, where it occurs, with..... MY-COMPUTER:

Time, I think, to suggest that you dig out the Apple Hardware Test disc that came with your Mac. (Sorry, but I can't begin to make heads or tails of your logs.)

I was more successful working in safe mode, but problems returned...

Can you elaborate a tad on that? Do you mean problems returned while you were still in safe mode, or only after restarting normally?

Research suggests that the 10.6.8 update has caused similar problems for a number of other folks (I googled unable to find driver for this platform "10.6 8"), although one needs to filter out the reports from those trying to install OS X on Windows hardware.

Do you use Time Machine? If so, it might be worth just rolling back to 10.6.7 and awaiting fresh developments.

Hi, J! Hope you enjoyed a floral symphony of a spring. smile

Your log does show errors with the Wacom driver. What happens when the tablet is disconnected?

The 32 bit display is unlikely to be a problem, but following Artie505's suggestion of running the Apple Hardware Test (or Techtool Pro, or Drive Genius) for at least five iterations would pretty well either eliminate or identify a hardware failure, including the monitor and video card.

Hi DK!

I was so busy culling everything from files to furniture to the netherworld of my basement (i.e., life) that I'm afraid I hardly noticed spring -- or where my TechTool disk ended up. My gardenias are in full, heavenly, bloom right now, though, so clearly the universe is unfolding as it should. Hope you and yours are well!

I eventually did have a crash in safe mode -- but by then I had so many apps running that I was probably fully loaded with extensions. I'm afraid all my drives are so chockablock with high-res photos that I haven't been doing automatic back ups, and, unfortunately, cloning my startup drive before moving up in the world didn't make my To Do list. On the ironic bright side, FedEx did deliver my 3TB Time Capsule yesterday.... tongue

I'm using the Cintiq as my only monitor, so I'm hoping I can get things sorted out before biting that bullet. If I can't locate Tech Tool by tomorrow, I'm thinking maybe I should just go back to my original Snow Leopard disk, do a clean install, run the updaters and then reinstall my apps. Does font corruption still figure into the picture the way it used to? I haven't used a font utility since OS9!

Font corruption can still play a role in oddball situations, but the Font Book app can check for corrupted or duplicated font files and pretty quickly identify those problems.

Sorry to have disappeared -- killer week! Many thanks for the advice y'all! My new plan is to skip multi-tasking and do things sequentially till the malefactor reveals itself to me.
