Mac Pro will not start

My Mac Pro has developed a frustrating fault, twice now, it has refused to startup - it sounds as though it has booted, there is the "Hero" chime but then it carries on grinding away, struggling to start, the screen doesn't light.
I have to Power off. As it never actually starts I can't open a CD tray to insert DW or TTPro OR select to start from E-drive or another drive (I have a weekly clone at hand).
I found with repeated attempts, the first time this happened, two weeks ago, that when I unplugged the Wacom tablet it quite independently tried to start but didn't. But I thought I had a hint and unplugged all USB devices, again it tried without my pushing the start button, but again it failed.
I disconnected everything, checked the "seating" of the AJA Kona card and the XT1900 graphics card, as well as the RAM trays, and then tried - it started.
One cheap USB cable I chucked and then re-attached all the FW drives and USB devices. Again it started and for a week I was happy, but this last weekend, again it refused to start.
I pulled out the Wacom tablet! No change, then all the USB devices, no change - then everything. I attached my MacBookPro by FW and tried FW Start - but as it never starts the monitors I couldn't see anything BUT the Desktop of the MacBook showed both the MacHD and the VideoRAID - so the drives do mount.
I can't get the MacBook to do anything because the MacPro is grinding away trying to start.
But with everything disconnected, it started.
So now I'm facing a repeat cycle if I can't find an answer.
It has been suggested that MacPros suffer failing Power Supply, but it is very rare.
I have the last Report Log and All Messages log - the All has very odd entries, Digidesign and iLok as well as HAL plugs - I don't use this machine with ProTools, but might have installed iLok to update a Dongle a couple of years ago. Also, the Report has mention of MacMini 3.1 at the end,the MacMini is in another room attached by Ethernet?!
I attach the Report of the event.
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated. Pashdej

Comments: Trying to Boot my MacPro 2.66 Ghz 4 core Xeon, fails to Start, screen remains black - startup sound continues indefinitely and then fans go mad

I can't interpret that log but I had a similar issue with my G4 DP 450. After replacing the internal backup battery, the problem went away, never to return. I don't know if a weak battery affects Mac Pros this way (my Mac Pro has not given me any problems) but it might be worth a try. In addition, you could reset SMC.

From the looks of the panic log, it seems like what's happening is that it's dying when it's trying to load the graphics card driver. This may indicate anything from a problem with the system software to a hardware problem with the graphics card itself.

The next thing I would do is try to start from your mac OS X installer CD. It should contain a hardware test program; you often need to start from the CD in a special way to start the hardware test (the CD should have printing on it explaining what to do to start in hardware test mode).

Let it run the hardware test repeatedly, and see what comes up. My suspicion is that you're likely to see it fail when it does the video card tests. These failures are often intermittent, so you may need to let the test run repeatedly to track it down.

Thanks guys, another answer at MacFixit also picked the graphics card, the X1900 apparently had a recall that I never heard about. He reckons that this is most likely the problem, but the recall is finished now and the machine is out of extended warranty! My bad luck.
Thanks again though

Maybe you can turn your luck around. Call Apple, explain the situation, and perhaps, just perhaps, you will be extended the courtesy of solving the problem. What do you have to lose? The phone call is free and Apple has been known to do this sort of thing.
