I always felt so safe having a Mac. I found out today that several people in my email address book in Yahoo were sent an email from "me". I never sent it so it probably has a virus. Yikes! How could this happen? Any ideas? What can I do to prevent this? Do I have to invest in some antispyware now?

Thanks so much.

I don't think it is a virus. I have had friends on both AOL and Yahoo have their addresses "stolen" and fraudulent emails sent out asking for money etc. Changing your password for Yahoo may help. I am not sure how they do it.

Thank you. Hopefully, changing my password will help. I notice now I have to put my password in every time I do a different function on Yahoo. I never used to have to do that. Wonder what's up? Also, I just now had to put my password into Finetuned Mac. I usually just click Login and it fills it in.

Thanks again.

When you log in there is usually a little check box underneath password that says something like
Keep me signed in
(Uncheck if on a shared computer)

Did you, by any chance, clear you cookies, Rita? That would account for it,

If not, clearing them now may help.

I don't think cookies have anything to do with what Rita is describing. The password that is automagically filled in on the form loaded when an FTM Login link is clicked comes from one's keychain, via the browser's autofill function. FTM cookies control whether one remains logged in between visits, not whether the password is supplied by the browser when one goes to log in.

I usually stay logged into Yahoo x 2 weeks and then it asks for a password. That changed and it kept asking me each time I tried to read an email. It may have cleared up now, not sure but I am going to change my password.

Thanks.

I cleared my Yahoo cookies after it started asking me for my password numerous times, not before. This freaks me out.

This time when I came back to the FTM site because I got a response, it automatically logged me in.

I stand corrected by dkmarsh; AutoFill would tend be the critter responsible for your issue. (I thought of it and immediately forgot about it. crazy )

I've run into a similar issue with AutoFill, but in a much more recent version of Safari than you're running, and although I've now got it functioning properly, I can't begin to tell you what might have corrected my situation. (It seems to me that reinstalling Safari might have helped.)

You know, as far as Yahoo Mail goes, whenever it asked me in the past to re-log in, I always had to log into the whole thing, ID and password. Yesterday, whenever it asked me to log in (several times for some reason), I had to put my ID in but the password automatically filled in. That was so weird!

Anyway, I have changed my password and put in a security pic to prevent phishing per Yahoo. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks to all.

Certainly it is possible your Yahoo address book has been hacked. It happens. On the other hand, it is also possible the spam emails were generated by a virus infected PC you sent an email to or where you did a "reply all" and it ended up in their mailbox and teh virus grabbed all the email addresses including yours from there. Viruses can also steal email addresses from almpost any file or document in a PC. That is a common ploy used by virus writers for years. Unfortunately there is little the victim, you, can do about it except hope the owner of the PC discovers the infection and has it disinfected. crazy
