Thanks, folks! It feels much warmer here with your wishes!
Jon, I am fast approaching this stage. For the candle blowing, this is what the younger generation is for to provide help. They usually love it.

Lucky for you that you're a violinist!

When I began listening to classical music I was amazed by the length of some violin passages until I remembered that violinists don't have to stop playing to breath. grin

Wind players can play long passages using circular breathing, a technique that involves inhaling and exhaling simultaneously. I have heard Wynton Marsalis play endlessly (and flawlessly) while doing it. Once, I figured out how to do it myself but lack of practice (and, being a violinist, motivation) caused me to forget.

Thanks for the interesting link.

Does it explain Dizzy's pouches?

Dizzy's pouches were unrelated to circular breathing.

As far as I can tell, Dizzy's pouches were idiosyncrasies of his playing. As I recall, when I managed to do circular breathing myself, it involves closing the uvula (that thing that hangs down at the back of the throat) while exhaling so that you could inhale simultaneously. Also, you can see Dizzy pausing for breath if you watch tapes of him playing.

yeah, I expect Dizzy could circular breathe if he wanted to, but I would guess his cheeks were all about bad technique as a kid, and a developed style later on.

what a musician.

Thanks. I have a very old recording of the late Rafael Mendez playing Moto Perpetuo and this must be how he did it.

And, of course, I add my best wishes. As some of us get on a bit, and things start creaking, I'm reminded of the Bette Davis comment, "Getting old isn't for sissies."

Bette Davis also had a comment when Joan Crawford, her bête noire, died: "Of the dead, say nothing but good. Crawford is dead. Good."

Hey, Jon... Your post has come up at the top of a Google for "dizzy's pouches" for the last 30 or so hours. grin

Thanks! Spent most of my birthday with a large group of friends, who pitched in to help paint the house. What better gift can someone ask for? (Other than the obvious "an unstoppable army of killer robots," that is.)
