Epson Perfection V100 in 10.6.6

Hey folks, looks like some of the regulars are still around. Warm & fuzzy feeling. smile

Anyhow, been a LONG time, but I now have a Mac on my desk @ the office again, a Mini running 10.6.6. Not having luck getting my trusty Epson Perfection V100 working, though. I have the official Epson 10.6 drivers installed. When I connect via Epson Scan or Acrobat Pro, the scanner kicks off & readies to scan, but then then nothing, and ends with the apps needing to be force-quit. It's listed as a scanner in Print & Fax syspref, but "No Scanner Selected" if I open it.

The scanner definitely works, used it the other day in WinXP. (I'll be installing it in Win7 under Parallels shortly, but hope to primarily use it in OS X.)

Any ideas? Thanks!

Update: VueScan works, so obviously an Epson driver problem. Great. And of course VueScan costs almost as much as the scanner and means and extra step or three for what I want to do. Sigh. I guess Win7 scanning it is...

While I haven't done this myself, I have read of people who successfully scanned using Image Capture or Preview. Both are in /Applications. Give them a try before you lay out money for VueScan.

From Epson's Mac OS X Snow Leopard Support page:

Quote:
If your Epson CD does not indicate support for OS X 10.6, DO NOT INSERT YOUR EPSON PRODUCT SOFTWARE CD IN YOUR SNOW LEOPARD COMPUTER.

I was unable to find any explanation of the consequences of failing to follow this prohibition, but the bold red all-caps trifecta suggests they might be dire.

Thanks for the suggestions. This is a fresh OS install using Epson's 10.6 drivers from the website, not from CD. Image Capture & Preview don't detect the scanner, which is expected considering my results with the Printer & Fax prefpane.

Aha! So if I first try (and fail) to use the official Epson TWAIN drivers, then Image Capture (etc) will never see it afterwards. But if I re-plug in the scanner and use Image Capture from the start, it works. So for some reason trying the Epson TWAIN driver breaks the built-in OS driver connection to the device.

Unfortunately I'm not a fan of Image Capture. It takes several steps just to properly page size, defaulting to individual page component cropping. Also, it doesn't auto-OCR the page into elements like Acrobat, which is key for document scanning.

Does anyone have a cheap scanner that works with Acrobat (TWAIN) in 10.6? Thanks

We throw those discs away when setting up a printer, unless they're necessary. They're more often a hazard than a help. Always download the latest and most appropriate drivers. If drivers are available online, burn the disc.

False alarm.

Sorry...just absorbed the "printer" part.

False false alarm, Artie. Read the part about scanners. The Epson Perfection V100 is included in the list of supported printers and scanners.

Muchas gracias, Senor.

I looked for that on CNET and Epson and didn't find...didn't occur to me to go to Apple.

See Jon's post after mine; the update covers your scanner.

Thanks, yes, the scanner works in Image Capture, which means it's supported by the OS. But I need the scanner to work as a TWAIN source or otherwise go direct to PDF OCR. Image Capture & Apple built-in drivers don't do that.

Anyhow, thanks everyone for their input, but at this point I think I'm going to give up and do my scanning in Windows. It's just not worth spending any more time on this. Shame on Epson for such poor OS X support.

I've recently scanned with my perfection 1650, but that may have been on 10.6.5. I usually use their software or viewscan

Not sure why or how since I'm using Epson TWAIN not Apple drivers, but after the new Apple Epson drivers software update, things seem to be magically working. I can finally now scan/OCR to PDF directly with Acrobat. It's still not nearly as smooth as with Windows -- the Epson GUI doesn't disappear completely behind the scenes & Acrobat gets a bit crashy -- but at least it works. FWIW

Anyhow, thanks everyone for their input. Regards
