it just occurred to me, first macfixit, now versiontracker...
and versiontracker was REALLY useful - is there a preferred replacement now?

MacUpdate has its detractors but I find it useful.

I still look at CNET, but I love the idea that MacUpdate allows me to filter out stuff in which I have zero interest.

MacUpdate seems to have cleaned up its act quite a bit. E.g, clicking on the download link no longer moves us away from the info page. [I hope that change is permanent.] I've even noticed some changes since the recent Mac App Store opening. [that popup icon/thingie no longer appears, thank you.]
cNet's Mac download area is just fugly... I don't even go there anymore.

I complained bitterly about that and several other things, and, judging from my most recent exchange with Chad Harrison, I scored a point or two.
The pop-up icons can be toggled by clicking on the "i" icon next to "Show me."

I had used MU for 2 years and while I liked it ok (I only gave it 3 of 5 stars) I found $100.00 for a 5 year license a bit steep. Only kidding, 'tis but $20.00 for a 1 year license.
Still, because it was better than the rest, I used it. Then, when it was time to renew my license, there were great problems, none of which the developers were able to resolve. Ergo, I am now sans MU and I still don't know if my credit card is put to right…
Fortunately, many developers include the option/preferences to auto-notify or download when a new version/updater is released. So that, with the potential of the App Store, and $20.00 in my purse, combined with my daily surfing habits, muchly negate the need for MU.

It seems the wares downloaded from there can differ significantly from their real-world counterparts. For example, the latest TextWrangler is somewhat crippled compared to what we powerusers have come to expect. The lack of auto-authorization (or ANY authorization) deactivates its ability to perform as described right here in the Lounge. We need to go directly to barebones.com to get the real thing.

There is a good explanation of the differences in the regular and App Store versions of TextWrangler at Mac OS X Hints.

I found VT to be best, in no uncertain terms, and I bemoan its passing!!! (I particularly miss its version history feature.)
If anybody is aware of a comparable alternative, pleeeze let me know.

clicking on the download link no longer moves us away from the info page. Hmm, i guess some developers' download links can override that behavior. e.g., http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21992/burn(clicking on the download link there moves us to sourceforge.net)

I guess I haven't hit the right app on MacUpdate yet, but I ran into several on CNET (before I trashed my link) that took me to the App Store...their only source.

Sourceforge is MacUpdate's major exception of that 'stay home' behavior. And App Store-only apps will move you to the App Store from MacUpdate as long as you're running Snowy and have AS installed. Otherwise, you'll find yourself on an App Store Preview page.
