wow, no comments on 10.6.6 yet? how's everyone liking the app store?

I'm curious to know how they got it 'seeded' with apparently over 1000 apps before release. some kind of developer preview or secret deals?

Developers have had access for months now. It makes no sense to launch a store with nothing in it.

I haven't gotten to it yet, but I'll say that while it'll be a major boon to developers $-wise I'm not at all happy with the prospect of losing my ability to maintain an archive of my 3rd party d/l's.

I will archive my apps, utils, etc. before I update them, but I prefer to archive dmgs and zips (although I'm not 100% certain that that's a more desirable option [Edit: It is, because it maintains the availability of Read Mes and other included goodies.]).

This "bringing of Macs and OS X to the masses" is taking its toll on those of us who are more knowledgeable, and it doesn't look like it'll get any better for us. (I'm beginning to fully understand the uproar when DOS's "tweakability" was sacrificed to Windows and to sympathize with the affected users.)

Re the App Store-

Does anyone know if California sales tax is added or will Apple attempt to collect the applicable sales tax based on the state in which the SW is downloaded? And of course, our international friends may be concerned with VAT.

AFAIK (or remember), I have never had to pay sales tax on downloaded SW. So now I wonder if that is in store (no entendre intended)...

If d/l'ed software is, in fact, taxable the sales tax collected will be that charged in the state to which it's d'l'ed, but I don't think it's taxable.

I assume we'll find out quickly.

I just ran the update uneventfully...only 1 restart, and all is well...so far.

Edit: I ran the Combo.

I did not have such luck. Tried to install the combo, it quit with an error midway. The second try was successful. Then repaired permissions (a whole bunch of them were repaired including the private/var) and ran Onyx on a hunch. It quit reporting disk error. Fortunately, external DU repaired everything and it checked OK. Don't know for sure if it was the update itself or the fact it quit the first time or it was lurking before. Now it seems OK.

I just got around to repairing permissions, and there was a laundry list, but almost all of them were related to /Library/Application Support/iLifeMediaBrowser....

I've just installed the Combo version, using the Software Update function under the apple, without any hitches.

I've also opened the applications I use most, particularly older software, and none seem adversely affected.

Note: My standard process, with any OS update, is first to do a Permissions Repair and then make a clone of the old system....just in case.

Now, if I can just figure out how my life will be better having the App Store.

Does anyone know if there are actually any advances in things like bug fixes or security. The update advisory includes the standard boilerplate: "The Mac OS X 10.6.6 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac".

However, unlike other updates, there is no listing of anything that's been fixed. The only descriptions are related to the App Store. Does that mean that the addition of the App Store is the only real change?
