This morning I recorded, for temporary use, about 45 minutes from my EyeTV feed. However, when Time Machine wanted to do a regular backup it was going to run out of room and need to delete early backups.

I stopped the backup and temporarily shut Time Machine off. I then went into TM and deleted the large video file using the "Delete From All Backups". So, I'm okay for now except I continue with TM off.

Is there a way to tell TM not to record a particular file in the first place?

Go to System Preferences > Time Machine and click the Options button. Drag the file into the TM window. (Alternatively, click + and then select the file.)
