Removing Rosetta From Snow Leopard, Doable?

When Snow Leopard is released in a few weeks, I will be forced to install Rosetta, as it is still required to run Quicken.

Presuming Intuit keeps it’s promised release date of February 2010, Quicken 2010 will no longer require Rosetta.

So when(ever) that happens, is it easy remove Rosetta? If so, how? Or, is it easier to merely reinstall SL?

I know NDAs are at play, but any insight, even in general terms, will be appreciated.

In my simple mind, removing Rosetta may not be necessary. One can just get info and check Universal. Hope I am not missing something.

Thanks Alex. That may be the simplest solution after all. I was hoping to save space by removing the Rosetta code, but (in truth) had forgotten about your fix/technique. And I doubt that Rosetta takes much space. Or so I hope. And, since I have ample HD space, no problems are near-term

Still, I wonder if Rosetta is an application and thus may be easily removed/uninstalled. Or, is it something that becomes so ingrained with the OS that an OS reinstall is the wiser (only) option.

I'm just taking a wild guess here, but based on the past, I predict there will not be a Rosetta uninstaller. Once installed it will not be easily removed. I'm not saying it couldn't be uninstalled, just that it won't simple.

But this is just my intuition tingling here so take it with a grain of salt.

Larry,

Yeah, removing the Rosetta code could be an impossible chore, Well, practically so.

I used File Buddy to hunt around my Leopard and could not find (even) one hit. I struck out searching "invisibles" as well. Indeed I have concluded that once Rosetta is installed, it's there until a reinstall.

I'd imagine the only reasonable way to completely remove Rosetta would be to reinstall the OS without Rosetta checked. Unless someone comes out with a third-party removal utility. Of course, we'll have to see how the final installation routines work, because if some of the rumors are true, a clean reinstall might even be necessary. Anyhow, if I were you I'd just leave it alone; agreed it takes up very little space in today's day. What takes up much more is compatibility code in UB apps, which can usually be removed with one of several utilities (although not always safely). Personally, I like the idea of having Rosetta available just in case. If you're not running it, won't slow you down just sitting there.

According to this MacMagazine extract, Rosetta weighs in at only 1.9 MB.

Sorry for pestering -- 1.9 MB is certainly small by today's standards.

I guess, you are right. Looks like there will be an option of installing Rosetta in 10.6 but no uninstall because it is part of the OS (see http://www.apple.com/rosetta/).
You would probably need a reinstall of the system as you rightly guessed.
