Could someone tell me how to do outlining in NeoOffice? It isn't quite obvious.

I want to have the first level A,B,C, and the second level 1,2,3. So:

A. Title
1. information
B. Title

On the menu bar click on Format > Bullets & Numbering > Options and you can create whatever style meets your fancy

Still not clear to me.

I've been hitting the bullets icon to get the outlining toolbar to appear, then I hit Numbering On/Off which replaces the bullet with the number 1. Unfortunately, this only gives me a list for numbers (1,2,3) not an actual outline (A,1,a).

Howdy.

You are only changing the list symbol, not affecting structure. I have found that using Paragraph Styles is much more helpful and consistent. You can then set up the style of each paragraph to include outlining.

Info on Styles, scroll down to the appropriate section - while you are at it, look at Page Styles and List Styles.

One step at a time.

  1. Format > Styles and Formatting
  2. Choose any one of Numbering 1... Numbering 5 or Control+Click and select New to create a new named numbering style or Modify to modify the select Numbering style
  3. Click on the Options tab
  4. Select Level 1 then on the numbering menu select the numbering style your desire for level 1. The options are
    • 1, 2, 3, ...
    • A, B, C, ...
    • a, b, c, ...
    • I, II, III, ...
    • i, ii, iii, ...
    • A ..., AA ..., AAA ...
    • a..., aa..., aaa...
    • Bullet
    • Graphics
    • Linked graphics
    • none
  5. Select Level 2 then on the numbering menu select the numbering style your desire for level 2.
  6. Repeat for levels 3 through 10 or as far as you want to go
  7. To use your newly defined outline style...
    1. Place your cursor in the document where you want to begin the outline
    2. On the menu bar choose Format > Styles and Formatting
    3. Double click on the outline style you modified or created
    4. Press the Tab key to increase the indent and outline numbering level
    5. Press Shift+Tab to decrease the indent and outline level

NOTE: You can create or modify as many numbering, outline, and bullet styles as you can think of using this technique.

I forgot to add you can save the newly created outline format(s) in your default template by...
  1. File > Templates > Save...
  2. Enter a name for the new template
  3. select My Templates under Categories
  4. Click OK
  5. After that when uyou open a new file in NeoOffice you can choose the outline template from My Templates or...
  6. File > Templates > Organize...
  7. Double click on My Templates
  8. Control+Click on the outline template you created
  9. On the context menu select "Set as default template"
After this the outline format you created should be automatically included in any document you create unless you specify a different template when you open the file.

Au contrair thank you! Your question got me to working on your problem and in walking through the steps to be sure I was giving you accurate information, I set up my own preferred outline style and made it part of my NeoOffice default style sheet. So now we both have what we want. grin

Just as a note. I've found that Open Office and Neo Office both are much more stable when you are using numbering than is Microsoft Word. Of course, using a full featured document processor that uses a different template system will give you a more stable platform still.
