IF you move to iTunes 10 and IF you can't handle the vertical red/yellow/green window buttons, the following will give you horizontal buttons like all other apps. Quit iTunes, type the following in Terminal and restart iTunes:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -boolean YES

To revert back to vertical, do the above with "NO" instead of "YES".

Thanks to a post on MacCentral.com for this tip.

Edit Reason: moved from Mac OS X Applications to the iTunes, iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple TV forum.

I like the vertical buttons! I think they fit very well.

I do miss the little bit of color in the sidebar, however.

The likely source is the article First look: iTunes 10, specifically the second paragraph under the subheading iTunes puts a fresh face on, in grayscale.

Agree.

For that particular window in that particular application, the question (for me) is: when do i actually click on any of those widgets and why? The answer (for me) is: i —almost always (over 67% of the time anyway) —click on the green goober to zoom down the main library/browser window to view something it's covering... and then —almost always (maybe 57% of the time) —click the same green goober again to return to its zoomed out state.

The way it has been (since iTunes 1.0) is that the mini-window state of the browser had vertical widgets and the fully-open state had horizontal widgets. That made quick zoom-down/zoom-back transitions quite awkward... because the green widget would jump away from the mouse pointer, when zooming in/out (unless we arranged for the proper offset by staggering the two views).

At least now in iTunes 10 we can arrange both zoom-states to line up properly and look smart at the same time (with both having vertical widgets), and thus easily collapse/expand the library/browser window without moving the mouse as much.

The best quip on iTunes 10 that i've seen so far:
Quote:
The new icon sucked all the color out of itunes.

<edit> BTW, here's a neat page to compare the UI differences:

iTunes 9 versus 10

[after the page loads, use mouse-pointer rollover to get the iTunes 10 version.]

thanks, Jon. haven't tried either one yet, but at least there's an option.

really not sure of the design ethic that led to the all-gray look.

I like the vertical lights, but missed all the other colors. I used a simple hack from MacRumors that kept the vertical lights and brought back all the colors. Works like a charm.

It's worth noting that the Terminal command mentioned in the article you linked to—

defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -1

—and that provided by Ira in the opening post of this thread—

defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -boolean YES

—are functionally identical. That is, the -boolean option in Ira's version simply allows the user to substitute YES or TRUE for the integer value 1 in the 'Hints version, and NO or FALSE for the integer value 0.

See Specifying value types for preference keys under man defaults for more.

Of course what you say is true (or 1 grin). I just think it is easier for people to remember if they every want to change back, substituting "no" is a more humanly logical way to undo something that includes a "yes".

TinkerTool 4.2 now allows some tweaks to iTunes 10 so that you can bring back some of the appearance of previous versions.

Since Marcel Bresink's excellent TinkerTool 4.2 has been mentioned for "adjusting" the iTunes 10 interface, it seems appropriate to also mention the following:
  • among its 1,000 plus hidden configuration settings for OS X, Apple, and some third party applications, Koingo Software's MacPilot 4.0.7 has twenty iTunes 10 interface tweaks (thirteen more than TinkerTool). Like Tinkertool It cannot completely replicate the iTunes 9 interface since both use the same hidden preference settings built into iTunes 10. Neither hacks or modifies any code at all. cool
  • Marcel Bresink's big brother to TinkerTool, TinkerTool System 2.4, incorporates all of the TinkerTool 4.2 functionality including the Snow Leopard and iTunes 10 hidden configuration functions along with most of the functionality of OnyX as well as some unique system tuning features of its own.
Note that TinkerTool is the only freeware utility of these three. Macpilot and TinkerTool System are commercial ware.

So I did. I seldom use OnyX and was not aware they had added the Quicktime and iTunes configuration items. Thanks for pointing that out. blush smile

It didn't work for me, either. (OS X 10.5.8, iTunes 10.0.) I haven't yet tried logging out/in or restarting.
