KPs after Migration or SuperDuper

I just got a new 27” i7 iMac

The data from which I wish to migrate is on a 24” Intel iMac, 10.6.4, and this machine runs without error.

A friend of mine at a local Apple VAR ran the Apple extensive hardware & software diagnostic tests on my new machine (including RAM). No problems. All tests passed as expected.

But here’s my saga/angst:

1. I reformatted the HD into 4 volumes. No problem.
2. I then reinstalled the OS, No problem.
3. I then used MA and the data migrated as it should (maybe). But now, when I try to restart this newly migrated volume, I always get a KP.
4. So I Ran DiskWarrior, SafeBooted, & Repaired Permissions; yet the KPs continued.
5. So I then tried cloning via SuperDuper, and that too was apparently successful, until the restart, when the dreaded KPs reemerged.

Oddly (to me), when I used System Preferences/Startup, both the migrated volume and the SuperDuper volume show up as valid startup disks.

A bare OS install works without issue, but once I add my old data to it, grief prevails.

Needles to say, I’m incredibly frustrated. Any help most appreciated.

Oddly (to me), when I used System Preferences/Startup, both the migrated volume and the SuperDuper volume show up as valid startup disks.

SuperDuper clones the drive, including system and startup information. This is to be expected.

Have you tried running the apple hardware test?

It'd be peculiar hardware that failed only in the presence of migrated data, though, wouldn't it?

I'm not clear on whether you experienced a kernel panic while safe booted, or just on subsequent reboots.

What specific version of OS X is on your new iMac's install disc? Did you fully update your software prior to the migration? If not, I suppose it's possible that you have some software on the machine you're migrating from which requires some piece of system software that's newer than what came with the new iMac...

A very quick reply as I'm in the midst of working with Apple (Care).

I'll respond to all ASAP, but until then, please excuse my absence and know that I do thank you immensely.

Joy at last, but the journey was not smooth. Still, for those who may have a similar problem, my (abbreviated) saga-

The first Apple tech I spoke with told me to reinstall the OS, but then migrate with an ethernet cable ILO a FW cable. Seemed dopy to me, but I did it. Still no joy.

The second Apple tech, advised ensuring I used a new (test) registration name when reinstalling and then migrating; to ensure there were no naming conflicts. A better idea me thinks, but still no joy.

The third Apple tech had me run this in Terminal to see what was precluding the startup: kextstat | grep -v apple. I then emailed my results back to him.

After I replied, we went through a series of Libraries, Login items, Launch Agents, etc., and deleted the potential culprits, etc. Success! And I only have a few (possible) applications to reinstall.

Perhaps tonight I’ll get some sleep.

Always, my thanks.

Congratulations!

After you have had a good night's sleep, you can update your profile.

I just made the move from a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo to a 27" iMac today. The only thing that went wrong was that the wireless keyboard was not recognized, and had to be turned off and then back on again.

A friend of mine who is a professional photographer suggested setting the screen brightness to 50%. That was a good idea.

The Surface Scan in TechTool Pro 5.0.7 took just under three hours for the 1 TB drive, with a 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 processor. I took a screen shot of the results (zero bad blocks out of 1,953,525,168). If a later scan during the warranty period finds any bad blocks, the drive will be replaced under warranty.

MMT, Ah, what rarified company I am in.

And speaking of display brightness, I am pleased to report that holding the Option+Shift while depressing the brightness keys decreases/increases the brightness in quarter steps.

Thanks, that is a good tip.

I have come across several people making the transition from a MacBook Pro to the new iMac 27", and they are all pleased with how much better their photos look on the new screen.

To add a bit granularity to what I actually did to find (and delete) the items that were causing my KPs at start up:

1. Ran this in Terminal: kextstat | grep -v apple
2. Read the results and then removed all the above findings from:
/System/Library/Extensions
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchAgents
~/Library/LaunchAgents

It seems that kextstat | grep -v apple returns a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions that are currently loaded. This implies that your problem was solved by removing all third-party kernel extensions.*

Just out of curiosity, how many of them were there? I ran kextstat without filtering the results, and every extension on my system is an Apple one. crazy

*Hence my question above about "whether you experienced a kernel panic while safe booted, or just on subsequent reboots."

My results as found by the kextstat | grep -v apple:

Index Refs Address Size Wired Name (Version) <Linked Against>
41 0 0x907000 0x2b000 0x2a000 at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch (2.2.05) <7 5 4 3 1>

FWIW: MouseWorks has not been updated in years, so 'tis no surprise. And the AudioSupport belonged to WireTap Pro, another app that was most long in the tooth. But I had not thought that the Little Snitch andTinkerTool/TinkerTool System would be troublesome. So much for my insight...

I asked the Apple tech if I could later reinstall these last two apps and he replied that there should be no problem. I have, and sure'nuf, no problems (yet).

I have that one also (in fact, it's the only one) and I'm not having KPs. I don't know if this applies to you but I'm mentioning it.

As a point of clarification, the Apple tech advised that any of the listed items could be causing the start up problem, not that that any particular one(s) were necessarily to blame.

Sorry if I caused undue alarm. Due alarm is, of course, ok.
