Installed and running without issues. The release notes say more stability with 3rd party plugins. We'll see.

It seems OK to me, so far. The only third-party plugin that I have is Saft and that won't load because the previous version is not compatible with Safari 4.0.3. If history is any guide, the developer will have an update by tomorrow.

Much the same here 'bouts, but my plugin is PithHelmet.

Initially PH would not load, but the well known/unofficial fix works as advertised, and once again, PH and Safari are as one.

Still, I have been running the new Safari for a very short time, so I had best withhold my final judgment (hardly ever done) for a bit longer.

As always, I caution others to refrain from the bleeding edge unless they have 1, preferably 2, verified backups.

So far no problems. I have no 3rd party plugins

Good plan. If the third party plugins are a problem, then stop after throwing the second party.

I'm using Safari without the benefit of any plugins too. What do they do? (just a few examples for my edification would be great)

Gregg,

"PithHelmet is an extended site preferences and ad blocking plugin for Apple's Safari browser. The basic purpose of the plugin is to empower you the user to view the web as you like. You can block ad images, Flash, Shockwave or horrible midi loops."

And indeed I have found, over several years, it to work flawlessly and as claimed.

Check that again. Two days ago the OS X 10.5.8 update contained Safari 4.0.2 not 4.0.3. The Safari 4.0.3 update is separate from OS X 10.5.8.

I've been using pithhelmet for awhile and I love the way it dumps those annoying flash ads and collapses out banners instead of leaving large gaping white holes everywhere.

There are firefox plugins that seem to be as popular for the same reason. I hear a lot of people recommending "noscript" plugin for firefox but I assume that only handles java annoyances and not banners in general.

An alternative to PithHelmet is Glimmer Blocker. It works quite well for me and it doesn't hack into the system. I don't use Firefox much so I don't know how effective it is there but, if I understand the way that it operates correctly, it should work.

Version 2.8.5 of PithHelmet is now out, compatible with Safari 4.x and above.

Unfortunately I can't get it to install on my MDD Power Mac running Tiger 10.4.11. When I launch the PithHelmet 4.x installer, it puts up a dialog box that says "Incompatible Safari Version. The version of PithHelmet is only compatible with Safari 4.x.x."

No amount of pleading or cajoling the installer seems to convince it that I am indeed running Safari 4.0.3. Strange. Perhaps it requires Leopard as well?

Rick,

An unofficial fix so that PithHelmet works with Safari 4.x. As always, it is best to have a verified backup, just in case…

1. In Safari go to the Safari menu and select "About Safari." Note the build number.
2. Quit Safari.
3. Navigate to /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins
4. Control-click on PithHelmet.bundle, then Show Package Contents
5. If required, open the Info.plist file with TextEdit
6. Find MaxBundleVersion and change it to 5531, or whatever build number you obtained in step 1.
7. Save the file.
8. Relaunch Safari.

If the above fix works, sing my praises. If it hoses your system, blame Jon, or Cyn, even or Tacit (ideally CNET) but not moi.

Seriously, I have done the above many times awaiting the Official fix and have never had a problem.

Thanks for the instructions. Here's the kicker for me and Safari 4.0.3: The previous version of PithHelment, 2.8.4, appears to be working with it. Normally when PH is incompatible with a new version of Safari, SIMBL gives a warning as such when launching it. Not so this time. Ads are being blocked just like they always have.

I'm not sure what's going on, the build version of Safari 4.0.3 on my Tiger install is 4531.9, but I can confirm that using your instructions, the MaxBundleVersion is over 5000 (I forget the number), so maybe that's why it still works? Maybe I just answered my own question, turns out Safari 4.0.3 for Tiger is still compatible with PithHelmet 2.8.4 due to the build number being lower than what PH is looking for with MaxBundleVersion. Interesting.

I had tried that when I upgraded to Safari 4 from Safari 3 and it didn't work for me. It didn't cause any problems, just didn't work. PH 2.8.5, however, is working as advertised.

Jon, As you suggest, I installed GlimmerBlocker. So far it is driving me nuts! Every site I go to seems to require that I "Allow" the connection, usually 3or 4 varieties of it. Does this process slack off after you have been to your normal sites? If not, how do I uninstall the program? I need help here. Dave

I don't know why you're having problems with Glimmer Blocker; it never did that for me. Have you tried playing with its settings in System Preferences>Glimmer Blocker? Specifically, click the Network tab and uncheck the box that asks for confirmation of changes. Or, look at other settings that are there.

If the above is unsuccessful and you want to uninstall it, quit System Preferences, go to /Library/PreferencePanes and trash GlimmerBlocker.prefPane. It's possible that you installed it in Users/you/Library/PreferencePanes instead, so look there if it's not in the first location.

EDIT: You have to deactivate Glimmer Blocker first before trashing it (same as following the instructions in my follow-up post). Read the link in that post.

Are you using OS 10.5? Glimmer Blocker 1.3.6 is not compatible with 10.4

Jon, I have sent a note to the Glimmer group. It seems that the first install of G-B was faulty/corrupt/? whatever. I could not follow the instructions and deactivate Glimmer because the box and the "activate...." line were gray type and would not respond to any input. Therefore I could not deactivate and could not escape the program. A second download to do a new install did the same thing! Third download gave me a complete pane where input would take effect. I could the follow the instructions and turn off and get rid of the program. The iMac, 10.5.8 is now working in a normal fashion. There may be a bug lurking in the downloaded program or I was just unlucky! Dave

Jon, The developer did not respond at all! My guess is that my comments that it took three attempts to get the program to correctly install and that just might indicate a flaw in the program, and not some inept actions on the part of the person trying to use the program, was not the comment they wanted to hear. I am not an expert by any means, but I have been using a Mac of some sort for 19 years and one reason I continue is that programs are easy to put into a Mac and easy to take out. This was not the case here, and there really is no action on the part of the computer operator at home that would screw up the installation. You click on the little blue button and watch it install! That's it. I still think there is a bug here. Dave

Finally, in Safari 4.0.4, Apple has seen fit to restore the ability to clear recent searches in the Google search box. This was missing in all earlier versions of Safari 4 and the only way that I could do it was via OnyX, which involved having to quit all open applications before it took effect.
