Hard drive needs repair

Hello
My computer has been slow lately. I ran Disk Utility to verify and got the message: "Volume Header needs minor repair. The volume "My Mac" needs to be repaired. Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed"
This problem started yesterday when I ran Onyx and Onyx asked me where Firefox.bin was. I then ran Disk Utility and at that time there was a problem with one file missing so I restarted with the install dvd and repaired the volume.
Now when I use Disk Utility from the install dvd, I get the message that the volume is okay. When I use Onyx, the computer freezes during verifying. Tech Tool says the volume is okay.
I have run Disk Utility when the user was "Test" and get the same message that the Volume Header needs minor repair. I have zapped the PRAM.
At this point, I don't know what do next. Please help. Thanks

I would say that avoiding OnyX might be a good start.
Any idea why it was asking about that Firefox file?
Seems odd it couldn't find it by itself (if it exists).

Which version of OnyX btw?

OnyX version 1.8.5

I also get the "needs repair" message using Disk Utility when the start-up disk is the computer. But when I use the install DVD as the start up I get a "volume is okay" message so there is nothing to repair. I downloaded the upgrade for TechTool Deluxe (version that came with Apple Care) and ran that and everthing passed.
It seems like something is running in the background and something is sucking up the hard drive space.
According to the istat Pro widget, 96% of the cpu is idle and 1.6 GB of memory is free.
After I got the error messages and did the repair I reinstalled Firefox.

OnyX 1.8.x is for OS 10.4, not 10.5. That's probably why you are getting the freeze. Try OnyX 2.0.6, the correct version for your OS. Did you use the install disk for 10.5? If you used a different one, it has the wrong version of Disk Utility for your version.

Thank you. I used the install cd that came with the computer which is 10.4. After I used the 10.5 install, it repaired the hard drive and after restarting the computer and running the correct OnyX and disk utility the drive tested okay.
Thank you again. I was about ready to erase everything and do a complete reinstall.

Excellent! I'm happy that I was able to help. If you ever decide to upgrade to 10.6, be sure that all your utilities (not to mention other applications) are compatible with it.

I had upgraded to 10.6 and I didn't like it mainly because of issues with printer drivers, etc. So I reinstalled everything about a month ago... now that took time!

> "1.6 GB of memory is free"

I assume you mean 1.6Gb of free RAM (at some particular moment in time); if you've only got 1.6Gb free on your HD you're skating on some thin ice.

Yes, I did mean RAM. I re-posted the hard drive space issue in New Users/Space on hard drive as the repair problem was taken care of.

Just for reference about printer issues and 10.6, see this thread about the problems that I had when I upgraded (now solved). The information might be helpful if you decide to try 10.6 again.
