After a little investigation I discovered that if... you are running Sonoma or iPadOS 17 on Apple Silicon or using an iPhone as the webcam and gestures are activated in Facetime... Facetime will respond to specific hand gestures with a spray of hearts, thumbs up, thumbs down, balloons, rain, confetti, laser lights, or fireworks. Like the effects in Message, they are kind of gimmicky, but fun and I can definitely see them livening up a Facetime meeting and emphasizing an important point. By-the-way, if you have an iPhone, it is absolutely the best possible webcam. If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it? — Albert Einstein

The link also includes some other FaceTime "goodies". On a Mac since 1984. Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.
