I just ran across this washington post article about a new privacy App from Consumer Report. I haven't had time to see if it actually works as WaPo claims, but it seemed worth trying it out and passing it along.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

More: It's for iPhones and Androids. The article doesn't say anything about a desktop version.

Based on the app's window size, it is obviously written for the iPhone, but I have been testing it on my Mac Studio running Sonoma, my iPad Pro running iPadOS 17 and iPhone Pro running iOS 17. Whether or not it will run on Intel Macs is beyond my ability to test, so I will leave that up to you. The app generates and sends a signed email to the site manager requesting them to honor their policy and remove your information from any information given to a third party. The request is eloquently phrased as s polite demand, The app's efficacy is dependent on the site following its own published policy and subject to legalistic interpretation but its association with Consumer Reports adds significant weight.

It's an iPhone app, so how would I go about porting it to my MBP?

As long as your Mac is running on Apple silicon (M1 or M2 chip) you can run iPhone apps on a Mac.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Thanks. My MBP is Intel, so that idea is dead in the water.

I guess I'll try to d/l the app to my iPhone - I always forget that I've got one. tongue - but I doubt that it will run in iOS 12.
