OS 10.14.6
I installed NOX only partially so to remove the files I used Find any File but there are 9 files I couldn't remove because they are locked or I don't have permission.

Anyone know if there is a way to trash them?

Change the permissions on the files so that you as the user now has permission. See this Apple Support article on how to change permissions.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

I clicked Open any File so as to view those 9 files, highlighted them all. Under results I saw 'remove from results' and they disappeared.

Does that mean they have been trashed? If so, that is an easy solution.

I am a fan of FindAnyFile, but it is indiscriminate in what it finds. Any discrimination is the user's and should consider not only the name, but where the file is located as well. For example, any file or folder under ~/Library/Application Support/NOX or /Library/Application Support/NOX should be safe to delete. If you have any questions, a screenshot of the FAF report would enable someone to help you decide if the file should be deleted.

What did you use for a search argument in FindAnyFile? I have never had NOX installed on my system, but an FAF search turned up 200 files with NOX in the name, and most of them essential system files. Deleting any or all of those files on my system could easily render it unusable.

Bearing that in mind, in FindAnyFile...
  1. Select the locked file you wish to delete
  2. Press ⌘I (Command I) to open Get Info for the file
  3. If Locked is checked, click on the checkbox to unlock the file
  4. Scroll down to sharing & Permissions and if it says, "you can only read"
  5. Click on the plus sign ( + ) at the bottom of the list of permissions and add your administrative logon ID with Read and Write privileges
  6. Close Get Info
  7. Delete the file

If you have Time Machine backup, an alternative that eliminates the risk of deleting critical files would be...
  1. Boot from the Recovery Drive
  2. Launch Disk Utility and erase the boot drive
  3. Re-install macOS from the Recovery Drive and Migrate your other files from Time Machine, being careful to restore from a time prior to your attempt to install NOX.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

My sole purpose of trying to download NOX was to install an emulator. When the process failed, I used FAF to delete the files and as I have said, there were 9 files that wouldn't delete.

Q: Have those 9 files actually been deleted by clicking remove from results? "Search argument in FAF"...what exactly is that? Sorry for my ignorance.

I am still in the process of trying to download an emulator but the last 3 are absolutely FREE but they want your credit card number!

I have screenshot your post for future reference.

Today I purchased an app remover.

"Remove from results" means they won't show up in any more removal searches, but I take it to mean they have NOT been deleted; they just won't show up when you run FAF.

Ira,

Not that it really matters, but I have to wonder where they are.

I don't know if it will help, but have you tried searching with FAF as root?

If your FAF window shows "Find," hitting option before you click will change it to "Find All."

If you see "Find All" already, you're already running FAF as root user.
