Messages, weird spelling thing

Using Messages on the normal OS, not iphone, finally noticed something odd.

I would right click for spelling when alerted to the red highlight. Often the word was not there after the right click to correct.

Then realized, after, months, it's never there!

I am so used to Mail, Word, etc, showing and then correcting the mispelled word. Anyone notice this? thanks.

I just verified, automatic or the underline reminder spellcheck works correctly in Message on both macOS 12.4 (Monterey) & iOS 15.5. Just on a hunch try rebooting your computer and see if spellcheck doesn't resurrect itself.

Thanks Joe, oddly on imac, in messages; sometimes red alert. and sometimes just corrects instantly without asking, often wrong word.
Even with red alert type hse for house, and does not give house option on the right click, but at least working.

Macbook air, nothing comes up at all , and no auto anything, totally broke

Both Monterey 12.3.1

Here is screenshot, top working one, though poorly, imac, bottom broken new mac book air.

Real head scratcher right?

A long shot guess, but is it a learning thing? That is, when you type "hse" and then replace it with "house" (not a totally obvious replacement), the spell checker learns your preference. Since your MacBook Air is new, maybe it is still learning so no options appear.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Ira I don't think so. On Macbook air you never see anything ever offered ever, not once.

BTW, you are right on house. I think Mail and Word used to bring up house as option but neither do now. But hous does so that is my new test word.

But any ideas? You agree very odd?

Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Text and see if Correct Spelling Automatically is off or on. If it is off then you should be seeing the red underscore on misspelled words. Also see what dictionaries are being used by clicking on the Spelling: drop-down menu. While we are on the subject, Marcel Bresink's TinkerTool System among many other useful features provides the ability to edit the User dictionary so if some misspellings have crept in they can be corrected.

thank Joe, ok Messages on laptop seems to be working today, -- type in hous and right click and see house offered with other go figure.. Maybe something you guys wrote the computer digtested!

Ironically, I just misspelled in this post and did right click yet nothing came up! In Chrome.. maybe all hit miss. (Yet for another word misspelled here, I did get choices, so depends on word? some words no choices?)

I do think the choices, are lack of them, depends on the word that is mistyped. I have noticed that behavior in my typings.

Agreed, and it is also a function of the currently active Dictionary, or Dictionaries, (see Dictionary > Preferences) and User Dictionary contents.
