When I try to connect with secure messaging from a financial institution, Safari grinds away for a long time and then I get a blank page with "Bad Gateway". Thinking it might be Safari, I did a Clear History but that didn't help.

Is the problem likely to be at my end or more likely somewhere else, like servers not communicating?

Did you try another browser? You only mentioned Safari.

No. I'm quite comfortable with the level of protection I have with Safari and the ability to use things like "Private Window", and am not anxious to access confidential financial information with an unknown entity.

Your browser is not an issue. Bad gateway explained and suggestions for fixing it.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Appears to be true. I tried everything at the recommended site but it made no difference. I have advised the sender who has contacted the company's IT department.
