Network: Item cannot be found.

On my new M1 MacBook Air , I'm trying to connect, via network, to an external hard drive in the other room, and I'm getting the message saying " the operation can't be completed because the original item can't be found". Yes the name of that external hard drive hasn't changed and it's still there is normal -- any ideas?

The fastest, easiest, most reliable "fix" in a case like this is to restart the missing drive, wait a good 60 seconds for the boot and network re-connection to settle, then try once again to access the drive. If that "old faithful" doesn't work, run something like IP Scanner, or similar (there are several you can get free on the app store) to see if the drive is being seen by your router. Let us know what information about the drive appears on the network or the drive becomes visible on the LAN.

NOTE: while it may seem obvious to you, a detailed description of the drive, the steps you take to connect it to the LAN, and those you follow to access the drive over the LAN. Could save hundreds (thousands?) of keystrokes and days identifying the underlying issue and devising a fix for it. I am not sure screenshots will reveal any information of value to this point, but if someone believes one is needed to clarify a point of understanding, they can certainly request you submit one.

Thanks JOe, but this drive does not reboot, as just an external 5tB Seagate, for data, in the bedroom office plugged into an imac. It used to show up in the living room office, on the macbook air, but now get that message.

Your Seagate is rebootable. Simply disconnect the power for several seconds then plug it back in. Easey peasey!

  1. Has your …new M1 MacBook Air ever connected to the drive?
  2. Does the drive show up on any other computers in the house?
  3. Just to be sure we are all on the same page, give a step-by-step account of how you attach, or attempt to attach, to the drive.

Joe the drive is working for years on imac in bedroom. It's going into imac in bedroom via usb2. Stable.

The new macbook air - kitchen --has never connected to it -- because it's new, never tried yet, busy with other things. Finally tried and got error. The old macbook air connected fine.. for years.

If you open Finder and look in the left hand under Locations there is an item named Network. If you click on Network, does the NAS drive appear?
