OS 10.13.6 Now that I have High Sierra, I see that I have an icon 'Backups of apple's iMac'...why would I need that?... even if I knew how to use it.

I've never seeing anything like that in any version of OS X/macOS.

Where is the icon located...desktop or elsewhere?

Have you tried clicking on it to see what happens?

When you open it, is the exactly the same as the regular HD icon except that there is nothing there, only the sidebar. It is 27.55 gb capacity and it says there is 27.48 gb available.
It is located directly under the HD icon

/Volumes/Backups of apple’s iMac

Can you see the icon? I doubt it.

Your iMac was updated to High Sierra as part of a Genius Desk recovery from a lost/unknown firmware password. What you are seeing is the result of a belt & suspenders[/b] precautionary technique to prevent loss of data in the process. Assuming your system is woking and you have not lost any data it is no longer needed. Since it shows up as [i]/Volumes/Backups of apple’s iMac it is either a partition or an APFS volume. In either case Disk Utility will reveal its specific nature* and is the only method available to get rid of it. If it is an APFS volume deleting it is almost completely risk free but removing partitions can be more dangerous. I would be very careful to have a known good clone or other backup before removing it as accidents do happen.

FOOTNOTES:

* when you look at the drive in Disk Utility and "Backups of apple's iMac" is subordinate to a Container then the drive is formatted APFS and you are dealing with an APFS volume otherwise it is a partition. to delete a partition see these instructions. To Remove a volume follow these

In disk utilities, this is the order shown.

APPLE HD ST1000DM003 MEDIA
HD SATA....
APPLE SSD SM0032L MEDIA
Container disk2
Backups of apple's iMac

It is an APFS volume. I clicked on Backups of apple's iMac> edit> delete and it now no longer shows in disk utilities.

OK?

Sounds right to me 👌
That is the true beauty of APFS. It is a bit weird for those of us who grew up on file systems optimized for use on rotating rust (floppy and hard disk drives) but so much more flexible and easy to manage.
