OS 10.12.6
Today I purchased a 2 TB Lacie HD which requires 10.11 I registered it with Seagate and thought I would partition it into 2 equal parts. When I open D/U, the partition is greyed out.
I then opened my back-up #1 HD, they are both in the D/U sidebar but only # 1 is not greyed out. Help please.

Is the Lacie formatted for Mac or windows, i.e. do you have to erase and reformat it before you can partition it?

I have just erased the HD and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) clicked DONE
The partition is still greyed out. What is missing?

I bought a LaCie drive a while back and had a similar problem. As I recall, earlier versions of Disk Utility used to show the drive as well as the volumes, but the current version of Disk Utility no longer shows the drive and volumes in that manner.
Now, in Disk Utility - just below the three coloured circles in the upper left corner - there is a View Button. It allows viewing the way it used to be.

jaybass When you erased the drive did you choose the GUID "scheme"? If not try that.

I do not get that window with the GUID option after clicking the erase button. I googled my problem and apparently, others have had this problem with external HDs.
Any ideas anyone? I'm thinking perhaps Lacie/ Seagate can help me.

If it says Mac OS Extended (journaled), that's the same as GUID.

If so, why didn't it work? Whilst googling, after erasing, there is a window with the GUID scheme optio
I contacted Seagate so hopefully they will come up with a solution.

After repeatedly erasing the new HD, the partition option allowed me to partition!! I'm not sure what happened except to say that the GUID scheme did become available after erasing the Lacie HD and then the untitled one underneath. It seems strange that I
had erased both before and I couldn't see the GUID option. However, Problem solved.
Thanks to those that responded.

If it says Mac OS Extended (journaled), that's the same as GUID. No, it is NOT the same. Mac OS (Journaled) can be either on GUID, Apple Partition Map, and maybe even Master Boot Record. You have to select the DEVICE not the partition to get the option. ADDENDUM: I just tested to verify my statement and Mac OS (Journaled) format can be on GUID, Apple Partition Map, and Master Boot Record schemes.
