When I do sit-ups on my new mat I pick up a static charge.

The first time I touched my 2015 MBP after picking up the charge, either the palm rest or a key, I got a nasty shock, but I no longer get a shock from my 2019 MBP.

If not the specifics, can somebody make a general guess about what may have changed?

Or, on the other hand, was my 2015 MBP defective?

Thanks.

Humidity may have affected this. If it is very humid, it is less likely that you will build up a static charge.

  • Improved computer design providing better isolation from earth ground.
  • You bought a humidifier
  • Changed A/C settings so the air does not get as dry
  • Climate change

Thanks, guys, for getting me to focus on this...

The static charges began when I switched from one of those dense gym mats we used back in high school to a new one with a synthetic fabric covering, even before I began running a DEhumidifier, and they stopped when I got this new MBP, so I guess it's somehow Apple's doing.

Grounding is such a BASIC design concept that I'm surprised it could be improved upon...or even have needed improvement in the first place.

Update: The problem is weather related, and all else was coincidental.

Since it cooled down and dried up, the static charges are back.
