Correction: Webpages, not pages.

I am glad to have my MBP. There are the expected annoyances of things that have changed, and I am trying to get used to them. But there is one thing I don't understand. It takes longer to load pages up on my new MBP than it did on my old one! This one has a faster processor, more RAM and I've barely used the SSD.

I wonder if there is a setting I need to change.

I look forward to some kind of answer in the a.m. Going to bed now!

The slowness may be a temporary aberration resulting from high Internet traffic at the moment; give it a chance.

Shut down and then reboot the modem. That often works for me.

Any time something like that happens to me, the first thing I do is run Speedtest by OOKLA to determine if the slowdown is in the computer or the internet. It is almost always the internet.

I did the speed test and it said 1.17 mbps D/L and .21 mbps u/l on my old MBP via external drive and 1.1 mb d/l and .14 upload on my new MBP so the old one is still faster. The average for my ISP in the boonies via microwave is supposed to be 768 kbps D/L and 256 kbps U/L. It looks like I'm getting more than I was promised.

I also can't tell by the speetest if it's my computer or the internet. What am I looking for?

I have my new MBP next to my old one because I want to transfer things but not via migration. The old one is definitely faster than the new one by several seconds. I don't know if that could be because I'm using the external drive or not, but my new one seems pokey. Maybe after I get some cache in there, etc., it will be faster.

Using an external drive is very definitely a drag on speed.

As to internet speed that is dependent on your ISP, the level of service you are paying for, the type of connection, the traffic load on your network, etc. Performance is best measured by comparing the same network over time.

For example I am using Charter Cable with a cable internet connection to my router and 802.11 ac WiFi to my computer and my current speeds are:

• Ping: 14 ms
• Download: 59.9 Mbps
• Upload: 5.1 Mbps

Last Sunday….

• Ping: 10 ms
• Download: 64.7 Mbps
• Upload: 5.68 Mbps

So I am ~8% slower today than I was last Sunday. I would attribute that to less internet traffic on Sundays which is common.

Those reading are in contrast to my network speed at a Starbucks last Saturday…

• Ping: 26 ms
• Download: 5.28 Mbps
• Upload: 5.65 Mbps

See above. My old MBP with the external drive is faster than my new MBP. A mystery, I guess.

My computer is faster now though the speed test still shows my old MBP as being faster for now. I find once I've put in a website and then go back to it after going out of it, it is faster. So I guess it just has to build up some cache. I also changed my DNS numbers to the Google ones 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 instead of 192.168.2.1. that was in there already.

The speed test shows transfer speeds between your ISP and your computer; it's not a measure of computer performance.

Bear in mind that the test doesn't show "definitive" results, rather they're only momentary, and can and most likely will change each time you run the test, even in immediate succession from the same machine.

The results you've posted from your two MBPs are close enough to be representative of the same ISP standard.

Try running a speed test right before you go to sleep, when most of America is asleep, and see what results you get; they'll be most indicative of your true state of affairs.

Yes you are building internet cache files that will help a site you have previously visited to load faster. Caching does not effect your download speed, rather the amount of data that must be downloaded.

There is also some file optimization going on the in the background. Over time, MacOS identifies your most often accessed files and moves them to the portion of the drive that has the fastest access. This process can take a couple of weeks while MacOS "learns" your use pattern. This is most noticeable on Fusion drives, a bit less noticeable on HDs, and almost unnoticeable on SSDs. (I will be interested to see if this is still the case with APFS in High Sierra. Supposedly the first public beta will be released this month.)

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) would be definitive, as MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) would be for your old machine.)
