Installed the Security Update No. 2/2010 on a 2.3 GHz DP PowerPC G5, 3 GB RAM, OS 10.5.8. Run permissions repair. Got three lines in the end:
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
ACL found but not expected on "Library".
As I remember, these lines did not appear in the report before. Can somebody please explain what are these and whether there is any need in them? I vaguely recall something like that discussed here but could not find the thread.
Thanks!

According to Apple these can be safely ignored.

The general reason ACLs do get reported is that: Disk Utility apparently tracks a few of them it (supposedly) knows about... so it tells the user —for purposes of information only —when it find any that it (supposedly) didn't know about.

The general reason ACLs never get fixed is that: we users may have put that ACL there (or changed it) intentionally... and DU doesn't want to undo some intention we may have had. [ACLs can be configured by us to either allow or deny access in a myriad of ways... so they are handy for both sharing and/or securing.]

So -- if all that is still not understood -- then fine. Ignore both me and Disk Utility. wink

What i can't ignore is that those three folders you mentioned...
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
ACL found but not expected on "Library".

...those are items on which Disk Utility **should** expect an ACL to be.

So what's the problem? Has the ACL been modified, and is it now different than Apple's default? I doubt it (but we could find out quick enough):

ls -led /Applications{,/Utilities} /Library

I suspect though that nothing is out of the ordinary, which means that the bug started in 10.5.0 still lives on in 10.6.3 (because Disk Utility is somehow referencing incorrect info after a software update).

Anyway, bottom line: yes ignore it (probably), but just know that it's buggy behavior and don't grow to think of it as normal. [OTOH, if a user (or some script) does deliberately alter those ACLs, then yes -- that's when DU should issue such a report.]

Ah ha, tricky Alex... posting in the wrong forum. grin

I won't strike out my statement yet though.
I dream for the day that bug gets fixed... and
i hope 10.6.3 has done just that.

Time will tell.

Sorry, I made a mistake for the forum and DK corrected me. Thanks!
Hal, I ran your command and got this in Terminal:
drwxrwxr-x+ 89 root admin 3026 Mar 10 11:42 /Applications
0: group:everyone deny delete
drwxrwxr-x+ 35 root admin 1190 Dec 18 08:51 /Applications/Utilities
0: group:everyone deny delete
drwxrwxr-t+ 64 root admin 2176 Nov 9 22:19 /Library
0: group:everyone deny delete
Any ideas what is this all about? I don't recall changing any permissions to anything special, and have only one admin user plus an admin test account (hardly ever used). Could that be a keychain issue because many passwords have been manually set to be used by all applications rather than the one that created them?

As expected. 100% normal, same as 10.5.0
Disk Utility is just confused (by faulty info).

Funny... I was under the impression my first post covered that part rather nicely. grin

If i knew the **exact** answer, i would simply tell Apple so they could fix the bug. smirk

Thanks!
My poor brain understands that as default value (they should be there), so it does look like a bug...

Just bumping this old thread out of curiosity, which I found via Google. Has this buggy behavior been fixed as of Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or 10.6.7?

I know it doesn't really cause any issues, but I'll be purchasing a new iMac as soon as they're refreshed with the Sandy Bridge processors (rumored to be in a few weeks) and I just wanted to know if this is still something to look out for when running Disk Utility.

Thanks for any info!

I haven't seen the ACL issue when repairing perms but I do get spurious messages about Java.

A better question might be, "Has there been a release of OS X in the past few years that did not have ignorable permissions reports of one kind or another?" If there were the next update generated another set of ignorable reports.
