I have tried about (10) different sites to download ONYX 3.6.8 (mojave) but when I get to the install part, either player install or google interferes.

Anyone know how to work around this problem?

I just d/l'ed OnyX 3.6.8 directly from this page at Titanium Software, its developer, and the .dmg opened instantly, with no installer involved...merely drag & drop the app in the .dmg window to the apps folder in the same window.

I think it's important to point out that developer websites are the uncontested first choice source for d/l's at FTM.

I downloaded from the same site but I couldn't open it. A window gave (6) instructions to follow but after that it still would not open.

Did you OPEN onyx? Do you know how to contact onyx?

I d/l'ed the .dmg, and when I double-clicked on it, a window containing OnyX.app and an alias to my apps folder opened...no instructions, nothing else.

I was unable to launch the app, because I'm running Catalina, and the Mojave version only runs in Mojave.

There's a "Contact" link at the top of the page I linked to.

I can't imagine why you're getting anything other than the same .dmg I"m getting? crazy

I have just erased & downloaded again with the same results. I contacted them and explained what I had done so hopefully they will resolve the issue.

Because you are on Catalina is the reason you cannot follow through to the end.

Happy new year.

Bizarre. Please keep us updated.

As I said, I couldn't open the app because I'm running Catalina, but macOS offered to open it, and that's as it should have been. I've got no idea about your extra steps to open, nor have I ever heard of anything lke them...whatever they are.

Happy New Year!

That contact you mentioned, the email has been returned, Service not Available. What a crock.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Better days ahead

Given the following comment you made in another thread...

As others have noted: I have never encountered an OnyX install other than a drag and drip install from an open .dmg.
  1. I know you ran Antivirus Zap Scanner, but have you tried a different anti-malware tool such as MalwareBytes or Intego VirusBarrier Scanner?
  2. If you go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS what it the IP address of your DNS server?
  3. Can you provide a sample of some of the 10 OnyX download sites you tried?
  4. When you download are you getting a .dmg file?
  5. When you say "Google gets involved" specifically what happens?
  6. Have you shut down and re-started your computer at any point in this process?

(1) no
(2) 192.168.2.11
(3) Titanium, s3amazonaws? I would lose what I'm typing if go asking for the onyx download sites. There several which I can't remember but if you still want them it would have to be a later post.
(4) yes
(5) When I tried to download, either player install or Google diverted me to install player or log in to google. Specifically when I click on the .dmg file.
!6) yes

I might add that I've had onyx for years but because I upgraded to Mojave, I needed the update.

I will look into some anti-malware apps.

here are some of those download sites. clever hello, applexnet, space monkey, treetxt1397 & mac torrents.

Hi Jay,

I just confirmed Artie''s earlier success with downloading directly from the developer's website as he pointed out above using the link on this page: https://titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html

The only question I might offer is this:

Did you in-fact drag the ONYX 3.6.8 app included in the mounted .dmg into the alias on the .dmg for your Applications folder AND THEN TRY TO OPEN IT FROM WHERE IT WAS NOW INSTALLED ON YOUR HARD DRIVE rather than from within the .dmg? It makes a difference....

edited to include refreshed developer's link

Item 5 together with your other problem thread convince me your Launch Services Database is well and truly hosed and must be rebuilt. Which leaves you with a chicken or egg conundrum of needing to rebuild the database in order to install the software you need to rebuild the database. crazy confused

RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • Delete any references you have to clever hello, applexnet, space monkey, treetxt1397, and especially Mac torrents as they are likely sources of getting more than you bargained for in the form of the 4 different malware on your system not to mention it may have been something from one of those sources that messed up the Launch Services Database.
  • In the future download any software from the developer's web site, or the Apple Store — even if you have to pay for it. (The developer deserves a fair return on their labor.)
  • Send an email to Titanium Software at contact@titanium-software.fr explaining that you cannot open the dmg because the Launch Services Database is corrupted and ask if they can send or point you to an uncompressed copy of OnyX 3.6.8. (Remember Titanium Software is in France, and allow for the appropriate lag in their reading your email and responding to your email.)

Yesterday I purchased and installed Malwarebytes after reading your reply. I'm hoping that it will sort out my problems.

I will follow ALL your advice and let you know how things are going.

Thank you.

I agree that is great service, and I know OnyX has always been free but I urge you to support OnyX with a generous donation.

DISCLAIMER: I have no relationship with Titanium Software, OnyX, or its developer other than being of a satisfied user with a firm conviction the product's quality and level of service deserves appropriate remuneration.
