Just started using Numbers. I notice that the black dot upper left you see in many apps that indicates file is not save never comes. Is it auto saving?

Auto Save (since OS X Lion for applications that are build to support this with Apple’s tech) saves during pauses in your work and, if you work continuously, it will save after 5 minutes. It saves in the background, so you can work without the distraction of having to remember to save, or being interrupted by progress bars.
It works with Versions, so you can go back to previously saved states.
It also mean you have to think ahead: Unlike other applications, you can’t open a document, edit it, and save it as a new document. You have to start with a copy to keep the original intact.

What is versions? How does one use it? But you can do a save before it auto saves?

No, not for these Auto Save apps. You’ll see “ — Edited” in gray next to the document name in the top center of the window.


In menu File > Revert to > Browse All Versions, you can flip through all* saved previous versions, and pick one to revert to.

thanks U, but versions are stacked on top of each other, I clicked arrow on side but ones below are just blank.

And you can save quickly if you want I think.

If you look carefully in the center of the blank pages you will see a pale grey icon of a cloud with a descending arrow. Click on that and the empty page will be populated.

Amazing, just like Time Machine design.. except using icloud I guess.

Wonder why Microsoft Office does not have an auto save... why not been copied yet.

There is a lot of stuff in MacOS, necessary to make this happen. I don't know if Microsoft Office for Mac is Cocoa (Object Oriented) or Carbon (Procedural) code but from past history with Microsoft and its products, I would guess it is Carbon as that would b easiest to port from Windows. If that is correct, it means Microsoft would have to write a LOT more lines of complex code to make that happen in their product.

Thanks Joe, ok I did a test with Text Edit and the arrows on the right did work, which was cool to see; though they did not work with Numbers. Your screenshot "load version" did work with Numbers, but I had to click one of up/ down arrows to get it going.


What is APSF?

Ok So Microsoft can't copy everything! (That's Samsung's job!)

APSF is my dyslexia kicking in when I was writing APFS.
