I would like to take several files (photos) and rename these NUMERICALLY - but without having to click on each file and type in a new number.

Example : I have 300 photos I want to re-number from 1 to 300. Is there an application or procedure which will allow me to "highlight all" and then have the photos simply (and randomly) number themselves from 1 to 300 in just a couple of clicks with the mouse?

Any ideas? Thanks.

There are quite a few. Name Mangler from Many Tricks is one that I can recommend (they are a great but tiny outfit who build really good utilities).

Many Tricks

There are also AppleScript and Automator scripts if you prefer the free route.

NameChanger's Sequence function will do what you want. Donationware.

True. But I find it quite a timesaver to ask the helpful folks at FINETUNEDMAC to narrow down the choices based on their experiences.

P.S. I "googled" RENAMER MAC and got 2.5+ million results.

Well then, to help narrow down the choices even more, a long time Mac product and personal favorite is A Better Finder Rename . Does exactly what you want, and more.

I have looked into the NAME CHANGER and RENAME applications.

A BETTER FINDER RENAME has what the other two do . . . and a bit more.

Any one of these three can meet my needs . . . it just comes down to which one I will favour for ease of use. I will give 'em all a spin.

Thanks a bunch!

Did some quick testing. Here are my first impressions (FWIW):

NAME CHANGER : Restrictions as to how one wants the file extensions to appear (e.g. uppercase vs lowercase, hidden or shown, etc.)

A BETTER FINDER NAME : "Free" version permits renames in groups of ten files (only) at one time. For example: The process to rename 300 photos would have to be repeated 30 times with 10 files/images done each time.

RENAME : Is the simplest to use (for my needs) and there are no limits or restrictions to the number of items or text content of titles/file extensions . . . and it's FREE

I usually use short terminal ditties to do renaming. or folderizing. customer had a folder with 9600 items in it, took forever to get listings etc. wrote a quick little script to make 28 folders (A-Z, #, and _) to move lettered, numbered, and all other files into different folders.

Makes it a lot saner.
