Anybody know why the Moon Phase widget (by DaylightMap and acquired via the Apple site) won't update on its own? Is there any way to fix it?
The only way to get current moon phase definition is to install a new one (which sort of defeats its own purpose).

Interesting question, and one I cannot answer. That said, I am not aware of self-updating widgets; the ones I have installed require manual intervention. I don't even recall getting out-of-date messages when using one that has seen updates, but that may not be standard.

Actually, the Weather Channel and Weather widgets update at regular intervals (as long as one is connected to the Net). There's no problem with them. So the question still remains, re the Moon Phase widget.

However, an ancillary concern: Those weather widgets go "back to square one" (ie, delete their location specs) and the Moon Phase widget goes blank whenever one logs off and then on. Everything has to be reentered for such. This is most annoying.

You make it sound like you occasionally have to log out (or RESTART!) your mac?

Indeed. Moving from one user account to another (me, guest).

It's not clear to me (even after reading Pogue on FUS) that my account would not be accessible to guest if I'm still there, albeit in the background.

Follow-up: I just test-drove FUS, and indeed it does protect against unauthorized access (ie, requires password when re-accessing passworded accounts).

Back to the original point:
The folk at daylightmap.com advise that the widget doesn't work on recent versions of OS X, but Apple has ignored requests to take it out of the directory.
