I hope this is the correct forum. How does one find out how many megabites an application takes up?

Thanks.

Go to /Applications and, if you are in List View, the size will appear in the Size column. Otherwise, you can always select the application's icon and go to File>Get Info (or press Command-I).

I assume that's just adding up file sizes within the package? not counting cluster size overheads?
Posted By: plantsower Re: Journler - 05/19/11 04:55 PM
Hi Jon:

The Get Info doesn't give me any megabyte info at all.

In list view, it just shows me individual entries, some say nothing, and others say 4 megs. Each and every one says 4 megs.

I need to know what the total space being taken up my Journler is, including my entries without having to add it all up.

Thanks.

What are cluster heads? You must be talking to Jon. As usual, you are talking way over my head! LOL!

Just want the complete amount, the amount of the application itself and the individual entries all totaled. I need to know so I can see what size CD to burn it on.

Thanks.

I just looked at the Get Info again and it's way different than the regular Just Info that pops up when I check other things. You know that long, skinny window?

Well, when I pull up Journler and click "Get Info", a big retangular box pops up and says "Welcome to Journler" and the date it was created. I wish I could send you a screen shot.

When in List View, go to the View menu, select Arrange By, and then select Size. You'll see the Size column thereafter.

OK, I was able to find the megabytes. When I went to burn it onto my disk, it said "The item Journler.app could not be moved because Needlework cannot be modified."

Needlework is the other folder I already have on the disc. Do you know what "cannot be modified" has to do with adding another item to the disk? I thought I could have several things on one disk as long as there is room.

Thanks.

How are you trying to burn the disk? I have always used a version of Toast rather than Apple's method. To be sure that you are doing this correctly, read Burning a CD or DVD and review your procedure in case you did something wrong.

The statement about Journier being moved makes no sense because you aren't moving it, just creating an alias. confused

EDIT: A thought: I don't know if it makes a difference but be sure that Journier is quit when you do this.

Yes, I've read how to burn a DVD. I burned one with the Needlework folder as mentioned. I know it doesn't make sense. That's why I asked. Grrrrr! So frustrating. I don't burn disks often. Is the program you mentioned a free utility?

Thanks.

Toast itself is not free but Toast Lite is, although I don't know if it will burn DVDs. I used to use it for burning CDs but upgraded to Toast. You can get the latest version of Toast from Roxio but I would try other solutions before spending the money.

Someone else may have a better answer so wait a bit before laying out any cash.

Did you give the disc itself a name? It sounds to me as if the alert you quoted was referring to the disc, not the folder.

In any case, if I'm interpreting your earlier thread correctly, the disc you purchased on eBay was a DVD-R. If so, it's not re-writable; you can write to a DVD-R or a DVD+R once, and thereafter it's read-only. To continue to be able to write to a disc, it needs to be a DVD-RW or a DVD+RW.
Posted By: plantsower Re: Journler - 05/19/11 10:35 PM
Thanks, Jon. That helps. And, I will wait but may try Toast Lite.
Posted By: plantsower Re: Journler - 05/19/11 10:37 PM
You're right. It's my DVD-R. So, I guess I cannot add to it. Now I see that the "W" means write. Duh!! Not sure what the (-) and (+) means.

I named my disc Needlework. Does it make a difference? I thought I had to name it so I would know what was on it but that I could add to it anyway. Well, not the dvd-r, though.

Thanks.

Hi, Rita,

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that when you burn a disc you should look closely at the burn dialog box, possibly the "Advanced" tab, where you will find a "Leave this disc appendable" option that will either be selectable or greyed-out, indicating whether or not adding to your disc is possible.

Your Toast Lite link refers to "Toast 5 Titanium" (Edit: Toast is up t v11.), Jon, and I couldn't find a d/l on Roxio's website.

Toast Lite may be a dead issue.

I forgot to mention that I use SimplyBurns, donationware. which has worked well for me.

Even more surprising is the fact that in Rita's previous thread, no mention was made of the meanings of the different DVD designations (-R, +R, -RW, +RW, etc.), explanation of which would have prevented her having to find out the hard way that her eBay purchase wouldn't work as she expected.

+/- and R/RW aside, wouldn't Rita's DVD have worked as she was hoping for, i.e. been appendable, if she had checked the "Leave...." box when she initially burned it? (Unfortunately, she never mentioned hoping to add to the disc in her first thread, so...)

I don't have a DVD-R, but I just checked with a +R, and the "Leave...." option was present and selectable.

I've always thought that a "W" meant that a disc could be erased and reused.

(Mac OS X 10.4): Recording on a CD-R disc more than once.
Posted By: jchuzi Re: Journler - 05/20/11 12:33 AM
Actually (to my surprise), the link that I posted gets you to download iMovie 9.0.2. CNET's site says Toast Lite. Considering CNET, perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. I, too, could not find a download on Roxio's website (which is the first place that I looked).

At any rate, Toast Lite is probably, as you said, a dead issue.

That doc includes some info I've already posted, but not the DVD info I requested.

Also, I haven't got any at hand at the moment, but I have, in the past, burned multiple sessions to CDs without imaging the info first. Maybe imaging is only required when you burn with DiskUtility, i.e. without a 3rd party burn utility?

And further, I was appalled to discover how much CD space each individual burn used, making multiple session CDs a poor solution as opposed to DVDs.

Edit: I just made the Tiger, which Rita's running, connection, but (Edit: I believe) my experience goes back to Panther.
Posted By: plantsower Re: Journler - 05/20/11 04:35 AM
Artie: I never saw a "leave the disk appendable" message when I burned it. Like you said, maybe not available for DVD-R. Hey, it was only 16 cents!!! Hopefully I can find another one or two cheap disks to do what I want to do. A spindle would never get used up!!

Rita

You may have missed the option by not having clicked on "Advanced," Rita.

I know the option was available to me for CDs in Leopard and, I believe, Panther, too, and DVDs are apparently no different in this respect.

To the best of my knowledge, gained from admittedly non-in-depth research, the differences between -R and +R CDs and DVDs do not affect the session capability we've been discussing.
Posted By: dkmarsh Re: Journler - 05/20/11 09:34 AM

Rita, quoting from the Apple Support article I linked to, "if you use Disk Utility to burn the disc, you can set it up for 'multisession' burning..." If you used Finder to burn the disk, following the procedure you quoted in your earlier thread, you wouldn't have seen that option.
Posted By: plantsower Re: Journler - 05/20/11 03:10 PM
OK, maybe that's it. I am wondering, since I can't go back and burn anything else to my DVD, would it have been possible to burn several things at once? Multiburn? on that DVD-R type of disc?

Can I remove or erase what I have on there and try again, only with two items this time?

Thanks.
Posted By: artie505 Re: Journler - 05/21/11 05:35 AM
Hmmm... Who'da thunk that Finder doesn't offer the same disc burning options as do Disk Utility and every 3rd party burn utility I've ever looked at?

I guess I've still got some stuff to learn! tongue crazy

Yup... That's it! I just learned something new, myself...that Finder doesn't offer the same burn options as do some/all(?) other burn utilities.

The + and - disc attributes refer to their compatibility with different types of optical drive.

Early on, there were two competing formats that were supported by various entities, and a + disc wouldn't work with a - drive, and vice versa, but today, many/most/all(?) drives, yours included, support both formats.

So... Yes, you could have burned any number of files and folders, up to your disc's capacity, to the DVD you bought.

And no, you can't erase your DVD; only a DVD with the "W" attribute can be erased and re-burned.

3 nickels and 1 penny (17.5 grams = 44¢) will cost you less to mail than will 16 pennies (40 grams = 64¢). wink
