Lately, I have been receiving a lot of spam email (first time in awhile). I tried setting rules to delete messages from the sender's address, but these dirtbags just switch them. I noticed, however, that the subject lines invariably connected words either with an underline dash or a tilde, probably an attempt to fool junk mail filters. Consequently, I set up rules to delete messages that either had ~ or _ in the subject line. Hopefully, that did the trick because I have not received any of this spam since. 🤞

But doesn't your rule put NON-spam email at risk...particularly as respects the underline dash?

I'll suggest that rather than "Delete," you set your rule to move those emails to Trash so you can see what's being deleted before it is deleted.

Good point. I have never seen a legitimate email with the tilde or dash but your suggestion is a good one.

Good thinkin'. I'm going to do the same, coupled with artie's suggestion of moving them to Trash first, allowing a review before deletion.

I took your suggestion and switched the rule to move the problem email to Trash. Lo and behold, one of them showed up there (and, of course, I immediately emptied the Trash). I doubt that any of these emails are actually things that I want but at least I know that the rule works.
