I have many sites bookmarked and stored in the menu bar in Safari 14.02. Some of them have subfolders or other bookmarks, and that is where the bug lies (single bookmarks in the menu bar are not affected). When I go to a problem bookmark and select a subfolder or bookmark, the bookmark disappears from the menu bar. When I hover the mouse over the empty space (where the bookmark had been), it reappears.

Example: There is a bookmark labelled "News" which has several bookmarked news sites. If I access one of them, "News" disappears, leaving a space but still showing the down arrow. Hovering the mouse over the space instantly restores "News".

Restarting does not resolve the issue. Other browsers (Firefox, for example) are not affected.

I have filed a bug report with Apple.

FWIW, having just updated Catalina (MacOS X 10.15.7) to the latest security update along with Safari 14.0.2, I tried to replicate your issue without success.....my nested sub-category bookmarks behave correctly and as previously expected.

Do you have any third party modifiers installed which might impact Safari? I'm running stock and clean without any extension managers / modifiers and without any cookie controls other than those built into the browser.

I couldn't replicate Jon's issue in Catalina/Safari 14.0.2 either, but after upgrading, I'm experiencing the same glitch in Big Sur/Safari 14.0.2.

You should probably submit a bug report as well.....and cite this thread's info for add'l background.

I tried to do it the correct way, i.e. including submitting a screen recording, but it kept bouncing, so I settled for submitting feedback.

I cannot replicate your error in Safari 14.0.3, so it may already be fixed and just awaiting release.

I just noticed that I had said "menu bar" in my original post when I should have said "favorites bar". blush

I just updated to macOS 11.2/Safari 14.03, and the bug has not been squashed.

I just spent time chatting with Apple (and it was quite a bit of time) and the best that they could do was to suggest reinstalling Big Sur. I could try that but the workaround is so easy (taking less than half a second) that it may not be worth the time. The suggestion sounds suspiciously like a Windows idea... mad

Considering that the issue arose in 14.02 and has been perpetuated in 14.03, I don't see trying a reinstall as anywhere near worth my time.

The bug is ridiculously non-critical, and the existing fix is ridiculously easy.

If I recall correctly, the bug was not present in Catalina and Safari 14.0.2 but surfaced in the same Safari version in Big Sur. I agree that the fix (if it works at all) isn't worth the time.

I don't use Safari, but maybe there is a newer version in OS 11.3, currently in beta testing. According to what I am seeing about features of V11.3 of Big Sur, one of them is "More customization options in Safari". Do not know what that means, but maybe there is newer version of Safari that might address the issue.

The bug is sooo, sooo innocuous, and the fix is so ridiculously simple and quick that belaboring the issue is faaar more trouble than dealing with it.

ppIf you want to see the future of Safari, you can get it here. Note that not all the features that are previewed will make it into a released version of Safari but most will. Once you install it, it will be included in System Preferences > Software Update updates, not App Store updates.

FWIW, the bug seems to have been fixed in macOS 11.3 and Safari 14.1.

Looks that way, but my red artifacts in QuickLook panes persist.

And a new bug: Three-finger tap to call up Dictionary used to work if my cursor was hovered over a word, but it now requires the word to be selected first.

Quite honestly, I'm very seriously thinking of reverting to Catalina, which I can accomplish fairly easily by updating the bootable clone I saved when I upgraded to Big Sur.

As far as I"m now concerned, BS is BS! There's not a single aspect of Big Sur that I'll miss if I revert, and several that I"ll be happy to see gone.
